Lewisohn’s address examines whether prison reform is practical and businesslike, arguing that the crime problem should be approached with calm judgment rather than uncontrolled emotion. The speech contrasts Americans’ composure in daily life with hysteria or vindictiveness toward crime, critiques indiscriminate resentment toward criminals, and emphasizes outcomes for public safety. \nGQQu81·2≤·27 \nTN discussing any method of making ourprison methods more sensible and en-lightened,I am reminded of an episode thatoccurred quite a few years ago during a visitI paid in Cornwall,England, which vividlybrings out the attitude of charitableness withwhich most people approach the crime prob-lem.I had occasion to talk to some of thesimple fisher folk there and I noted thatthe fisherwoman with whom I was talkinghad a cat,—a black cat. \nI said,“That is a very nice cat,is it not?” \nAnd she replied,“Yes that is a very nicecat but I had a much nicer one.Thatneighbor of mine killed her.I forgave herfreely for I was taken by the Lord longbefore she was,but I went down on my kneesand prayed to the Almighty God that Hemight strike her dead. But I forgave herfreely.” \nThere is a very remarkable differencebetween the mood in which citizens of thiscountry approach most problems of theirdaily lives and the mood in which theyapproach the problem of crime.·Despite \nPage One \nthe charge of emotionalism against Amer-icans,there is a certain jaunty maturity withwhich they act in many fields of their dailylives that is most admirable. In many of thesituations that arise during their daily routinethey are more civilized and understandingthan citizens of other nations. For example, they are almost pathetically good-natured ina subway jam.Watch the conduct of ourdrivers in crowded traffic tangles—it is amaz-ing how little cursing and swearing there isof the old truck-driver variety.Indeed, inmany trying situations of life Americans takepride in not losing their heads, but in meetingtheir problems in a cool detached spirit. \nNow it is remarkable that people who takesuch great pride in not losing their heads inthe many situations with which they are con-fronted in their daily lives, should so com-pletely lose their poise when they approachthe crime problem. There the man on thestreet,so objective and detached in many ofthe other routine actions of his daily life, acts like an unrestrained hysteric. \nThose interested in criminal reform andprison reform are often accused of being sen-timentalists and emotionalists,—theoristslacking in a sense of realities. The realsentimentalists and emotionalists are thosewho yield to uncontrolled exasperation intheir approach to the problem of crime. \nThey are indiscriminating in their attitudeand get equally excited about the action of thecold deliberate habitual criminal and the pes-tiferous mischievous boy.Of course thisspirit, though mistaken and costly,is pardon-able.For example,if our car is stolen, weare not apt to inquire whether it was by agang of professional habitual criminals thatmakes a business of stealing cars,or by aprankish boy on a lark. The result of thecrime is equally annoying whatever the mo-tivating cause. \nHuman nature being what it is,this spirit,as I have said,is pardonable. But,thoughit is pardonable,it is too costly an attitudefor society to follow. For society has foundthat an indiscriminating vindictive spirit isextremely wasteful—society simply cannotafford the luxury of retaliation.Prisonreform is no sentimental jamboree but justgood business judgment. \nEvery now and then some friend comesto me in a spirit of ","cbCaifNq9gDiT2YR","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifNq9gDiT2YR","pdf",528527,14,"English","# Columbia University Libraries
