The argument holds that God does not originate evil temptation, yet temptation is necessary for the development of Christian character. R.CHURCH,D.D. \n# IS GOD RESPONSIBLEFOR OURTEMPTATIONS?\n\nBY \nJOHN R.CHURCH,D.D. \nRoute 4,Winston-Salem,N.C.Approved Evangelist of the Methodist Church \nPENTECOSTAL PUBLISHING COMPANYLOUISVILLE,KENTUCKY \n里 \nMatt.6:13.And lead us not into temptation, butdeliver us from evil. \nSometime ago a prominent Bishop made the state-ment that it took him thirty-four years to appreciateand understand the real significance of this petition.I am frank to confess that it was the hardest for me tounderstand of any of the petitions found in this prayer. For a long time I puzzled over it,and could not appre-ciate it as I should.I remembered that in James 1:13,14 we are told,\"Let no man say when he is tempted,Iam tempted of God:for God cannot be tempted withevil, neither tempteth he any man;But every man istempted, when he is drawn of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived,it bringeth forth sin:and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” \nNow,in this passage in James we are emphaticallytold that God is not responsible for our temptations, but in this petition it would seem to imply that God isresponsible for our temptations, and that we have to beconstantly praying to God not to lead us into tempta-tions.Here we would seem to have a contradiction, but I am convinced that the Bible was written underthe inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and it does not con-tradict itself when properly understood.Really toappreciate the rich significance of this petition, thereare several things that we must have clearly fixed inour minds. \n1.We must recognize that temptation is necessaryfor the development of Christian character. \n# IS GOD RESPONSIBLE\n\nWithout temptation we could never develop thekind of character that God wants us to have.It is onlyby meeting temptation and wrestling with it and over-coming it,that we grow and develop. This leads us tosee that temptation is absolutely necessary for the de-velopment of Christian character;without it we couldnever be what God wants us to be. \nWhen it came time for God to create man,He ofcourse had the power and authority to create him inany way He saw fit.If God had so desired He could havecreated man so that he would have been governed byhis instincts like the other animals, and he would in-stinctively have done the right thing at all times.How-ever,if God had created man that way then there wouldhave been no virtue in doing the right thing. There isno virtue in doing a thing you have to do.We do notgive the animals of the field any credit for doing thethings they do,for we know they have no moral choicein the matter.God saw fit to create man differently, because He wanted some creatures in His universethat would serve Him not because they had to,but be-cause they wanted to.In doing this He took a greatrisk and threw great responsibility on us.He hasgiven us the power and privilege of choosing betweenright and wrong. We can either accept the bad andreject the good,or we can choose the good and rejectthe bad.In every such choice as that we show to Godand to the world that we serve God,not because wemust, but because it is our desire, and in every suchchoice there is moral worth and significance. \n# FOR OUR TEMPTATIONS?\n\nTo my mind, this is one place where our goodfriends, who teach unconditional security,go astray. They virtually teach that when a person is convertedthat their probation ends and that the whole thing isnow in the hands of God.They virtually teach thatby one choice of the will you can put yourself where itis impossible for you to do anything that will changeyour eternal destiny. They virtually make probationto end at conversion. We do not believe that proba-tion ends at conversion, but we believe it ends at death.—We believe that there is not only that initial choicethat must be made at the time of conversion, but thereare many other choices that must be made along theway. We also believe that enough wrong choices canbe made along the way to cancel out that first choice. \nThe truth of the","cbCaimaegRJ3yNfU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimaegRJ3yNfU","pdf",3229923,72,"English","# IS GOD RESPONSIBLE FOR
