Involvement in Subject Learning Scale (ISLS)\n\nNÉRÉE BUJOLD,HENRI SAINT-PIERRE,&VIDYA BHUSHAN \nUniversité Laval \n## Abstract\n\nSince 1984,when the American Department of Education published areport on higher education entitled \"Involvement in learning, realizingthe potential of American higher education,\"many studies have beenconducted on this subject pertaining mainly to academic involvementand,a wide-range concept of involvement in learning. It is proposedhere to limit the scope of this concept to involvement in subject learningas an easier bounded concept. The Involvement in Subject LearningScale (ISLS)was therefore constructed and validated and is presentedhere with its psychometric characteristics. This scale is proposed as aneducational outcome measure for research purposes on the quality ofinstruction in higher education. \n## Introduction\n\nIncreasing attention has been focused on teaching and learning inhigher education. In 1984,a study group sponsored by the NationalInstitute of Education of the American Department of Education pub-lished a report entitled “Involvement in Learning:Realizing thePotential of American Higher Education”.The authors of this reportproposed three conditions of excellence for higher education:studentinvolvement, high expectations and assessment and feedback. For thisgroup,\"the first of these three conditions-and perhaps the most impor-tant for purposes of improving undergraduate education-is studentinvolvement”(NIE,1984,p.17). \nStudent involvement in learning is a particularly wide-ranged con-cept and therefore cannot be easily measured.A scale was built in orderto measure student involvement in subject learning thus reducing thescope of this concept. The scale was constructed for use at the highereducation level in a Ph.D.dissertation and consisted of a self-rating scalefor French-speaking students in Québec higher education.TheInvolvement in the Subject Learning Scale (ISLS)is proposed in anEnglish version for validation and further research. \nThe concept to be measured by the scale will first be defined fol-lowed by a brief review of the literature.A description of the French ver-sion construction and validation procedure will then be given. Finally, thevalidity and reliability of the ISLS will be documented and discussed. \n## The problem\n\nThe problem of involvement in learning, which is seen as a priority inAmerican higher education,is often met with expressed concerns in uni-versity faculties. The problem of involvement is also often mentioned byemployers hiring higher education graduates. \n## Involvement in Subject Learning Scale 27\n\nFraser et al.(1987)have conducted a synthesis of educational pro-ductivity research in which they found that no attention was being givento student involvement in learning as an educational outcome.Mostresearch used academic achievement as a dependent variable. The lackof valid and reliable measurement tools for other research variables suchas student involvement in learning may be a reason explaining the use ofthis single academic achievement variable.Robert Pace(1985)haslargely contributed to the development of instruments to measure vari-ables other than academic
