is specifically designed to keep youcurrent with the latest technical advances andapplications in the Investment Casting Industry. We are confident you will find this and futureissues informative, thought provoking, and help-ful in your work. \nThe Investment Casting Institute is made upof independent member foundries and the prin-cipal suppliers of our raw materials.By workingtogether we have: \n—established design, alloy and tolerancestandards \n—provided a forum to exchange technicalinformation \n—promoted the use of our product—been the responsible spokesman for ourindustry. \nThe member foundries sponsoring this publi-cation are your reliable vendors of quality Invest-ment Castings. It is their business to furnish youwith unusual cast shapes in a wide assortment offerrous,non-ferrous,and special purpose alloys. These cast parts may dramatically reduce yourcost of machining and fabrication.Improvedquality is possible by applying our design freedomand wide choice of alloys to provide for improvedstrength and function.Any member foundry willbe pleased to consult with you at your request. \nCordially yours,RICHARD E.GRAYPRESIDENTINVESTMENT CASTING INSTITUTEMay \nABOUT THE COVER \nThe performance of this spacevehicle depends in part on thereliability of certain criticalinvestment castings to performeffectively under extreme heatand pressure.Full details instory at right. \n# Under Extreme Pressuresand Temperatures\n\nINVESTMENT CASTINGSRIDE INTO SPACE \nTHE PART:an investment-cast adapter(picturedabove)used in the igniter of the rocket engineof a space vehicle. \nTHE PROBLEM:greater reliability and optimumperformance under extreme pressure and temper-ature conditions. \nTHE USER:Thiokol Chemical Corporation's Red-stone Division,Huntsville,Alabama. \nThe adapter, which looks something like the topof a fire hydrant with a pair of tubular orificesprojecting from the top,is bolted to the head-endof the rocket motor case.It weighs approximately41%lbs.,and is produced from 4340 high-strengthstructural steel. \nThe part was formerly made from bar stock orproduced as a sand casting. However,it did notmeet the specified exacting requirements. \nThe original print called for 160,000 to 180,000yield strength, with 7%minimum elongationHowever,as an investment casting, the part typically gives 195,000 psi tensile strength,180,000yield strength, and 10%elongation.It is subjectto Class 1A,100%x-ray inspection. \n# How To DesignInvestment Castings\n\nIndustry's thinking about investment casting hasbeen pretty much like a pendulum—it has swungfrom one extreme to another. In the early days,over-enthusiastic boosters of the process made exag-gerated claims and many were \"burned\"when theclaims were not fulfilled.More recently, many whocould profitably employ the process have avoidedit because of the misconception that it is limited toa narrow range of special applications. \nAs usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle—and defining the“middle”design-wise is thepurpose of this article. \nBASIC ADVANTAGES Investment castings offerseveral basic engineering advantages to designers, engineers, and manufacturers. These include closedimensional tolerances, within the practical rangeof±.003 to ±.005 in./in.Such tolerances permitproduction of castings which require only minimummachining in critical areas.Often, parts need nomachining and may be used as cast.As-cast surfacefinish on castings is good, ranging from 40 to 125microinches root mean square. With secondaryfinishing operations,a surface finish of 32 micro-inches rms can be obtained. \nPerhaps the most outstanding advantage of theinvestm","cbCaii9Vit6w3Fbp","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaii9Vit6w3Fbp","pdf",5528257,"English","# Under
