It explains how translations vary, interprets the title and author name Laozi, and discusses historical context, manuscripts, and the interpretive role of translators and readers. almost as many translations and interpretations asthe Bible. Its title and authorship are as evocative andenigmatic as the text itself. When the title is translated intoEnglish,it is usually rendered,“The Way and|tsPower”,but a more accurate translation would be“The Classic \nBook About Virtue and the Way Things Are”.The name“Laozi”means, more orless,“The Good Old Boy(s),”which suggests to Western scholars that the author, who issometmes said to have been“born old”and lived for nearly \n1,000 years,is mythological and the texts compiled fromwisdom sayings in the second and third century B.CE.InChina,however,scholars accept Laozi as a historical figure, minus the accretions of mythos. There are many ancientmanuscripts of the Tao Te Ching, the earliest dating from168 B.CE.There is almost perfect similarity betweenthis oldest text and current texts, with the exception that thechapters are in a slightly different order. \nUnderstanding the Tao Te Chingis an interpretive exerciseeven for scholars of ancient Chinese, not to mentionmodern Chinese speakers and the rest of the world'speople who read it in translation. The text is enigmatic, the ancient language difficult, and while all translations areinterpretations to some extent, the Tao is almost completelydependent on the mind and heart of the translator. It isa screen on which the translator and then the reader canproject his or her own needs and wisdom. And that mighthave been just what Laozi had in mínd. \nThe Tao Te Ching is the ancient text of the religion calledTaoism, which was practiced for centuries in China. It \nbecame a folk religion that was nolongerinformedby thespare abstractions of its core text.During the CulturalRevolution Maoists brutally suppressed the religion, destroying temples and forcing priests toleave theirvocation.Anew Taoism, more bound to the text of theTao,seems to be developing in China now. \nThe spirit of the Tao is closest to the spirit of ZenBuddhism, although practitioners of many faiths have \ninterpreted the text through theirown lenses,as have parenteducators, leadership consultants, marriage counselors andother advisors of the world's people \n#
