Licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.  \nThe New Testament (NT) begins with the most important story the world has ever heard : the good news of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God. This story is the central point of all the Bible. All the Scriptures that came before were pointing forward to this great moment, and all the Scriptures afterward are about this gospel, this Good News. As the writer of Hebrews says, God has spoken to us in his Son (Hebrews 1:1) . Indeed, if weare to really understand what God wants to tell us in the NT, we must begin with the beginning of the story.  \nBackground of the New Testament  \nThe first part of the Bible is called the Old Testament (OT) . These are the books of Genesis to Malachi, written between 2000 and 400 years before the birth of Jesus. In this story, God tells us how he created the universe and that it was good!  \nAs the crowning work of creation, he created man and woman in his own image, and he placed them in a garden. God gave them work to do, and he gave them dominion over the rest of creation. Here at the beginning, we see God with his people in the place that he has prepared for them. They walk together with God, and this garden is like the first temple, the place to meet with God.  \nSadly, Adam and Eve did not obey, and so God sent them away from his presence, away from the land. Sin, separation, shame and death enter the story. One way of looking at the rest of the story is that God wants to bring his people back to his land, back to himself.  \nTo do this, God calls Abram to go to a land that he will give to him. Through Abraham, God plans to bless all the nations of the world (Genesis 12:3) . Later, God confirms this relationship with Abraham when he makes a covenant with Abraham. A covenant is a very strong promise between two people. This can also be called a testament, and this is the Old Testament.  \nMany years later, God again makes a covenant with one of Abraham’s children, the King David. He promises David that one of his children will build a temple for God and will rule as King for forever (2 Samuel 7; 2 Chronicles 21:7) . At that time, when Jews made someone king, they would pour oil on the head of that person, and so they called the king,“the anointed one”, or the Messiah.  \nThroughout the story of the OT, we learn that there are many obstacles to God’s people living with God in his land. God’s people break the covenant. Sin continues to separate God’s people from God. Foreign and local kings oppress God’s people. The people also realize that because of their sin, they cannot approach the presence of God. As the OT ends, God’s people are still asking themselves,“How can sinful people live in fellowship with God who is Holy?” In other words, how can a person make atonement for sin?
