separatevolume, and each volume includes a brief biography andbibliography, notes on the poems, and an introductoryessay.Bringing back to print many authors whose workhas been available only in anthologies, and presenting theselections in a format at once compact, attractive and in-expensive,the series is intended to appeal to both thegeneral reader and the student. \nJUDITH WRIGHT \nSelection and Introductionby the Author \nThis selection first published in 1963 by \nANGUS &ROBERTSON LTD \n89 Castlereagh Street,Sydney54 Bartholomew Close,London107 Elizabeth Street,Melbourne \nReprinted 1965 \nCopyright \nRegistered in Australia for transmission by post as a bookPRINTED IN AUSTRALIA BY HALSTEAD PRESS,SYDNEY \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nTHIs selection is made from poems published in The Moving Image(T946),Woman to Man (1949),The Gateway (1953)and The Two Fires(I95s),and also from the later poems in a collction,Five Senses, anda poem-series,Birds(I962). \nIn making a selection of this kind, the poet is at something of a dis-advantage.He has to disregard his own preference to some extent, inorder to choose the poems that seem likeliest to interest an audiencewhich necessarily does not know as much about his ideas and develop-ment as he knows himself.Looking back over twenty years of writingpoetry,it is quite possible to see faults and weaknesses that at the timeof writing seemed to be strengths;falsities that seemed to be truths;failures that seemed successes. \nMost difficult of all, perhaps,is looking with a steady eye at the poemswhich have been kindly received, anthologized and praised;for theseare the very poems the writer has to disown most firmly,if he is not toremain forever at their level, writing the same poem over again, lookingat the world with the same eyes. There is nothing more likely to spoilone's balance than listening too keenly to praise of any kind;the mostignorant blame is better for the writer. But in a selection of this kind, such poems must be put in,however hackneyed they may seem to thepoet;and however much he may yearn towards those which caughtnobody's eye,and long to point out their significance and their qualities,he must exclude them. For this is meant to be a popular selection. \nBut then the poet asks himself uneasily, popular with whom?Whois the poet's audience today?Very few people now read poetry forpleasure, but some, unfortunately, are forced to read it for the purposeof being examined in their appreciation of it.Poetry, like medicine, isnot often taken for its pleasant taste;it is prescribed. This is enough tomake it unpopular at the very outset. \nWell,he may console himself, sometimes a sympathetic doctor canbe found who will recommend a sea voyage,or a mountain holiday, \nor even a glass of wine before dinner.Perhaps, for some readers, hispoetry may turn out to be as enjoyable as any of these things.Thesedays it is about the only hope the poor fellow has. \nFor perhaps poetry is the least popular of the arts, just now.Forone thing,it has no obvious social advantages. An exhibition of paintingsis a place at which to meet other people and wear one's new hat, aswell as seeing the paintings;a concert is a social occasion as well as amusical one. Then there is the matter of prestige, which can attach toowning valuable paintings or even to knowing a lot about them, and tobeing seen at all the important first nights. But poetry is a very a-socialpleasure,and no prestige attaches to owning a lot of books of poetry(unless they are all first editions and rare copies, and this has nothing todo with the poetry they contain). \nSince poetry has so small an audicnce, the notion has begun to growup that it is a kind of survival from more primitive times,a form ofcommunication no longer needed by modern man.The fact is ratherthat modern man is somet","cbCaiuZRjGMeU6vq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuZRjGMeU6vq","pdf",2869581,108,"English","#
