The text argues that literature is not strictly linear, since themes recur across centuries and cultures, and that progress in literary production is not comparable to advances in medicine or athletics. By questioning conventional ordering from Munshi Abdullah onward, the author proposes using theoretical frameworks to renew students’ interest and understanding.","① \n# INTRODUCING MODERN MALAYLITERATURE:THE THEMATICAPPROACH\n\nLAURENT METZGER \nNo 7 \nAcademic Session 1992/93 \nISBN 9971-62-277-7 \nDepartment of Malay StudiesNational University of Singapore \nf \n) \nC2300 \n## FOREWORD\n\nI am pleased to write this short foreword to introduce the Department's Seminar andOccasional Papers Series. The series provides the opportunity for staff members ofthe Department as well as scholars of Malay Studies in general to have their researchfindings on Malay subjects made known to a wider audience. It is also hoped thatthis initiative will provide the avenue for a beneficial exchange of ideas andviewpoints on Malay issues between town and gown. \nThe Department would like to thank Hotel Properties Pte Ltd for sponsoring thepublication of the series. \nFinally,it should be mentioned that the views expressed in the seminar and occasionalpapers series are those of the respective authors. \n23 November 1992 \nProfessor Tham Seong CheeHeadDepartment of Malay Studies \n## INTRODUCING MODERN MALAY LITERATURE:THE THEMATIC APPROACH\n\nLAURENT METZGER \nWhen I joined NUS two years ago I was asked to teach a course on Modern MalayLiterature. Before starting such a paper,I asked myself what could be the best wayto teach such subject to Singapore students.I have known for some time that inMalaysia, for instance the usual way to address such a topic is to follow thechronological development of such literature. So,in the case of Modern MalayLiterature, the starting point is usually Munshi Abdullah who lived in Singapore atthe time of Raffles and then continue with, for instance the novels of the twenties, theshort stories before the Second World War and then those after that war and so on. \nAs the course was new at NUS,I wanted to try a new approach.I was of the opinionthat there must be another way to introduce literature instead of following blindly thetraditional model.I was under the impression that, with a new way to look atliterature,it could generate a new interest for it. \nSo I decided to try the thematic approach. \nOf course you are going to object that such treatment of literature is not really new.I would agree with you but at the same time,as far as I know, this approach has notbeen applied in the case of Modern Malay Literature. \n5\" \n1 \nSo the first question I would like to raise in this seminar is why did I choose suchapproach.First of all I did not start using such method for the sake of introducinga new way to look at literature. So what could be the possible reasons for my choice.First I believe that literature is not linear,at least not completely. To me it is notlinear in a sense that we cannot see a real development in literature. We often do notbenefit from past experiences in literature because we were not aware of them.Forinstance Europeans have been very proud of Romanticism in the nineteenth century. So we praise the works of Coleridge and Lamartine but do we know that ten centuriesbefore these writers poets in China,in the Tang Dynasty, used the same themes suchas regrets, separation between two lovers etc....So obviously European writers didnot know that many of the themes they wrote on had already been tackled by Chinesewriters,a thousand years before them.So literature does not build itself on previousproductions. In other words there is no obvious development in literature. There isno real improvement in literature. If you allow me a comparison we make in France, literature is like wine some years it is particularly good and some it is not as good asbefore! \nSo literature is not linear if we compare it to medicine and athletics. In medicinemankind has improved tremendously,we know how to treat thousand of diseases, even if we are still unable to cure some and if some are the result of moderndevelopment. In sports we are amazed to see records being smashed.Man runfaster, jump higher and throw objects, like the javelin and the shot putt farther.Butcan we say the same in the case of literature? Can we sa","cbCaipmfs50uqrcW","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipmfs50uqrcW","pdf",692945,1,20,"English","en",105,"# Foreword\n# Introducing Modern Malay Literature: The Thematic Approach\n## Rethinking chronological teaching\n## Literature as non-linear development\n## Thematic continuity across time\n## Comparing literature with progress in other fields\n## Theoretical approaches and teaching methods","[{\"question\":\"为什么演讲者认为现代马来文学不应只用按时间顺序的方式来教授？ \"}]","INTRODUCING MODERN MALAY LITERATURE: THE THEMATIC APPROACH | PDF",1787811893,31,{"code":4,"msg":31,"data":32},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":33,"title":13,"keywords":34,"description":14,"schema_data":35,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":28},"introducing-modern-malay-literature-the-thematic-approach","",{"@graph":36,"@context":84},[37,53,67],{"@type":38,"itemListElement":39},"BreadcrumbList",[40,44,47,50],{"item":41,"name":42,"@type":43,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":45,"name":46,"@type":43,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":43,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":43,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/introducing-modern-malay-literature-the-thematic-approach/150021/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":41,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-27",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":4},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"为什么演讲者认为现代马来文学不应只用按时间顺序的方式来教授？" ,"https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,96,99,103,108,113,118,123,127,130,134],{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":93,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":21,"slug":126},9,"Religion & Spirituality","religion-spirituality",{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":128,"show_sort_weight":21,"slug":129},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":131,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":132,"show_sort_weight":131,"slug":133},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":135,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":136,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":137},19,"General","general"]
