The work describes spiral columella removal that increases shell value while making shells easier to steal, especially during copulation when males must partly emerge. Observing an unusually large penis in the studied species led to the “private parts for private property” hypothesis: enlarged genital size functions as an adaptation that allows mating while remaining safely inside shells, reducing theft risk. Testing used over 300 male museum specimens across land and sea habitats, linking custom-covered shells with larger genital traits and shell availability with sexual size.
