The conversation traces her career trajectory, training, and motivations, and then explains her current research on the São Paulo macrometropolis, a large-scale, interconnected territory defined by demographic concentration, economic weight, and coordinated regional functions. It also addresses how public policy and academic attention are evolving toward this post-metropolitan organization.","IntervIew Regina Maria Prosperi Meyer \nstudies ofa city inmovement \nUrbanist who created new disciplinesat FAU-USP dedicates herself tostudying theSão Paulo macrometropolis \nMárcio ferrari | Photo Léo Ramos ChavesPUBLiSheD in APRiL 2017 \nr \negina Meyer enjoyed teaching atthe UniversityofSão Paulo's School of Architecture and Ur-banism (FAU-USP) so much that when facedwith the sudden interruption of reaching re -tirement agein 2011, she decided to “goinde- \nnial.”“I was in full flight,” she says. “I was still researchingand trying to create new disciplines.” The enthusiasm ofher students was contagious, and vice versa. Inthe early years of the 2010s, our researchwas advancing towards an enlarged ur-ban scale —that of the macrometropo -lis; a concept that, although not new,has gained more support in the last fewdecades because of the enormous ter -ritorial expansion of many cities andmetropolises. In our case, it is the con -jugation of the São Paulo metropolises, which are located in a large territoryof 53,000 square kilometers and havea population of 30 million inhabitantsacross 173 municipalities.
