It argues that the novel is not limited to the theme of racial passing, but also presents a deeper exploration of how race, gender, class, and sexuality interact in shaping identity and systems of oppression. Although the term intersectionality was developed later, the novel anticipates this framework through its portrayal of Black women’s experiences in early twentieth-century America.\nThe first section of the study focuses on the historical and social background of the novel, including the Harlem Renaissance, the Jim Crow era, and the expectations imposed on Black women during that period. It also considers Larsen’s mixed-race background and how her personal experiences influenced her literary work. The second section reviews major scholarship on the novel and applies an intersectional reading to the text.\nThrough the characters Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, Larsen highlights the instability of identity, the pressure of social performance, and the psychological effects of living under multiple forms of oppression. Irene represents respectability, domestic security, and racial loyalty, while Clare seeks freedom and opportunity through passing into white society. However, both women remain restricted by patriarchal, racial, and class hierarchies. The ambiguous ending further emphasizes the destructive impact of these intersecting forces.\nKeywords:\u000bIntersectionality, Racial Passing, Identity, Gender, Class, Race.\nTable of contents\nSection One\n1.1 Introduction\nIntersectionality is a term that was originally developed by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in her groundbreaking 1989 essay “titled Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex” to explains how overlapping categories of the social world generate affective and qualitatively different forms of discrimination and privilege than the sum of its component parts (Crenshaw, 1989). Although Crenshaw came up with this framework within the legal sphere, it has since been identified as a vital instrument in literary analysis, most specifically in interpreting texts that feature characters moving through more than a single system of social hierarchy at the same time (Collins and Bilge, 2016). A literary prefiguration of this theoretical insight is Larsen's Passing, which was written by Larsen some sixty years earlier than Crenshaw developed the concept of Intersectionality.
