It reports findings from the NBF Consumer Bed Buying Survey, including lower mean prices, higher purchase frequency, growing shares for roll-up and flat mattresses, and younger shoppers’ willingness to pay more for sustainable designs. The issue also covers inflation and market pressure in furniture versus flooring sectors, retailer impacts, and industry awards, products, and services across multiple 2026
Retail
Luxury Flooring
Beds
Cream of 2026
ULTIMUS ®
ANOTHER CHAMPION
SHARE YOUR INVICTUS
@[invictusflooring-www.invictus.co.uk](invictusflooring-www.invictus.co.uk)
A difference you can feel, naturally.
We’re incredibly proud to have been named Bed Manufacturer of the Year and Product of the Year by the NBF.
Two awards that celebrate what we do best – combining generations of bedmaking expertise with natural materials, innovative spring technology and an unwavering commitment to handmaking exceptional beds here in Yorkshire.
~~ ~~ HARRISON SPINKS . CO . UK ~~ ~~
All Bed Confusion
Almost half of shoppers don’t know which bed brand they’ve just bought, as inflation diverges between sectors
It seems that many consumers shopping for a mattress or bed are highly confused by the whole process. How else do you explain that 40% of them couldn’t tell you which brand they’ve just bought? And you can’t really blame them. Retail and online bed displays are still largely a sea of white rectangles interspersed with small POS that is obviously failing to get over the message of why Model A is so much better than Model B.
It’s not that bed brands have cut advertising spend: since 2000, spending has risen from about £22m to more than £100m last year, a real increase of about a quarter. The problem is that where potential customers see (usually very similar) ads has become so fragmented, and there are more brands. Gone are the days of 10million Sunday evening viewers seeing hippo and duck mascots when watching Heartbeat in 2000. And if you stop spending online, consumers rapidly forget they’d ever heard of a brand. This is where investment in staff training – beit for shop floor or call centre – can really make the difference, as seen among the Bed Industry Awards winners.
August showed the difference between the furniture and flooring sectors when it comes to inflation and the likely impact of the US/Iran war. Household furniture saw annual retail price rises of 1%, up from 0.6% in July, after several months of deflation. All of this with historically high shipping costs. In contrast, smooth flooring rises more than doubled to 6.6%, while carpet and rug increases slowed but were still almost 5%, as oil prices remain about £100 a barrel. Furniture has seen several months of deflation (the outdoor sector saw 10.8%), while flooring has seen a solid 12 months of inflation for the sector. Great for boosting the top line, but not helping attract shoppers.
As I write this, Headlam is in its fourth week of administration, and many staff are none the wiser what their immediate future holds, let alone Christmas mortgage or rent payments. For them restructuring is taking too long.
EDITOR’S COMMENT
INTERIORS MONTHLY OCTOBER 2026
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
NEWS
4 Bed buyers don’t know what they’ve bought
6 DFS lifts group market share to 40%
10 Ian James dies, aged 59
FEATURES
12 New products
16 Service
Honesty really is the best policy
18 Sustainability
A break from the oil link?
22 Awards
More winners say thank you
26 Retail
Durability, durability, durability
32 Beds and bedroom
BIA winners crowned
36 LVT
New format, personality, taking the temperature
42 Outdoor
Plans for 2027
45 Preview
VIFA EXPO, Decorex
85 Review
The Flooring Show, Long Point
88 Trade products and services
Clarity, hitting peak, digital, old and new

|
| | | Editor: Andrew Kidd
T: 07814 780 273 E: [akidd@interiorsmonthly.co.uk](akidd@interiorsmonthly.co.uk)
Furniture advertising (South): Tim Boden
M: 07976 122 150 E: [tboden@interiorsmonthly.co.uk](tboden@interiorsmonthly.co.uk)
Furniture advertising (North): Jarrod Bird
T: 01565 631 397 E: [jbird@interiorsmonthly.co.uk](jbird@interiorsmonthly.co.uk)
Carpet, flooring advertising: Joanne Paull
M: 07817 624 922 E: [jpaul l@interiorsmonthly.co.uk](jpaul l@interiorsmonthly.co.uk)
Representative in India: Amarje","cbCaivJHNpxB4fIv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivJHNpxB4fIv","pdf",31527903,104,"English","# News
## Bed shoppers spending less, but more frequently
# Retail
## Durability and shopper attraction
# Beds and bedroom
## Industry awards and BIA winners
# LVT
## New format and personality
# Outdoor
## Plans for 2027
# Review
## The Flooring Show, Long Point
# Trade products and services
## Clarity and digital focus","[{"question":"What does the issue say about bed shoppers’ brand recall and confusion?","answer":"It reports that many consumers cannot remember the bed or mattress brand they purchased, and explains this as an outcome of fragmented advertising and competing similar offers."},{"question":"What key survey results are highlighted about mattress buying?","answer":"The NBF survey is cited for a 16% fall in mean price paid, more frequent replacement behavior, and shifts in mattress types such as roll-up and flat options."},{"question":"How does the issue compare inflation between household furniture and flooring?","answer":"It contrasts furniture’s slower inflation or deflation trends with stronger flooring inflation, attributing differences to factors including oil prices and shipping costs."}]","Interiors Monthly October 2026 - Retail & Beds | PDF",1791238653,160]
