We plan to conduct a study of on-demandPrEP in Australia. |

| AIM |
| --- |
| To measure interest in using on-demand PrEP amongAustralian users of daily PrEP, to assess the feasibilityof our planned study. |

| METHODS |
| --- |
| The PrEPX study was an Australian demonstrationstudy of daily PrEP conducted in Victoria, SouthAustralia and Tasmania, which enrolled over 5 , 000participants between July 2016 and March 2018 ,consisting mainly of MSM. PrEPX ceased on March31 , 2018 .
On 23 November 2018 , a single email invitation wassent to all former PrEPX participants to complete anonline survey.
The 15-question survey covered demographics, previous and current PrEP use, satisfaction with dailyPrEP use, knowledge of on-demand PrEP, interest instarting on-demand PrEP, and reasons for having ornot having interest in on-demand PrEP. Mostquestions had multiple answer options, andparticipants could select multiple answers. Severalquestions included free-text answer options. Theonline survey remained open for two months.Univariate logistic regression analyses were used toassess associations between interest in on-demandPrEP and other survey questions. Survey questionswith significant (p<0 . 1) associations in univariateanalysis were entered in a multivariate logisticregression model. |

| CITATION |
| --- |
| In press: Open Forum Infectious Diseases.
DOI: 10 . 1093/ofid/ofz287 |

| RESULTS |
| --- |
| 970 complete unique survey responses were received.
Median age of respondents was 39 years (IQR 31 to 49) . 966 respondents(100%) were assigned the male sex at birth, and 961 (99%) reported havinga male gender. Almost all respondents (99%, n=965) reported having malesexual partners.
Current PrEP use was high (86%, n=830) . Of the 970 participants, 116 (12%)reported not being satisfied with daily PrEP, and reasons for dissatisfactionincluded concerns about toxicity (27%), infrequent need for PrEP due toinfrequent sexual activity (27%), dislike of taking pills (20%), difficultyremembering to take pills (16%), renal problems (5%) and ongoing adverseeffects (4%) . These concerns were expressed more frequently by thosewho were interested in participating inanon-demand PrEP trial.
Of the 970 respondents, 469 (48%) reported interest in participating in anon-demand PrEP study forthe following reasons: prospect of less long termtoxicity (n=297, 63%), having sex infrequently (n=282, 60%), moreconvenience compared to daily PrEP (n=245, 52%), lower financial cost(n=225, 48%), and less ongoing adverse effects (n=106, 23%) .Respondents who were not interested in participating in an on-demandPrEP study (n=501) gave the following reasons: concerns abouteffectiveness (n=338, 67%) or feeling anxious (i. e. less protected) (n=189,38%), perceived difficulty remembering to take a dose at least 2 hoursbefore sex (n=292, 58%), having spontaneous or unplanned sex (free textresponses, n=76, 15%), being at low ri","cbCaiibctQvYYfEY","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiibctQvYYfEY","pdf",314502,"English","# Introduction
# Aim
# Methods
# Citation
# Results
# Conclusions
# Ethics
# Contact details","[{"question":"What was the purpose of the study?","answer":"To measure interest in using on-demand PrEP among Australian users of daily PrEP and to assess the feasibility of a planned on-demand PrEP study."},{"question":"How was interest in on-demand PrEP assessed?","answer":"A 15-question online survey was emailed to former PrEPX participants, covering demographics, PrEP use, satisfaction with daily PrEP, knowledge of on-demand PrEP, interest, and reasons.
