The study tested whether interdaily variability of physical activity (PA) intensity and variability of the rest-activity cycle each show distinct associations with incident dementia. Interdaily PA intensity variability was defined with MAD over total 24-hour activity and during the most active 10 hours (M10), while rest-activity cycle variability used MAD for start times of M10 and the least active 5 hours. Over 5.2 years, 319 (13.7%) developed dementia; higher PA intensity variability predicted lower dementia hazard, whereas greater rest-activity cycle inconsistency increased risk even after adjustment for total 24-hour activity.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":40,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/interdaily-rest-activity-variability-and-risk-of-dementia-the-aric-neurocognitive-study/426619/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/interdaily-rest-activity-variability-and-risk-of-dementia-the-aric-neurocognitive-study/426619.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Alexandar","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-11","2026-09-29",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":24},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"How did the study define interdaily variability of physical activity intensity?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"It used MAD of total 24-hour activity and MAD of total activity during the most active 10 hours (M10). Interdaily variability of PA intensity was operationalizedas two measures: median absolute deviation (MAD) of total 24-hour activity and MAD of total activity during the most active \n10 hours (M10) . Interdaily variability of rest-activity cycle was defined in two ways: MAD of the start time of M10 and MAD of the start time of the least active 5 hours. Participants were followed until incident dementia, death, last contact, or December \n31, 2022. After a median 5.2-year follow-up, 319 (13.7%) individuals developed dementia. Comparing the lowest (Q1) to the highest quartile (Q4) of MAD of total 24-hour activity, the cause-specific hazard ratio (HR) of dementia was 2.3 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.56, 3.46), with similar findings for MAD of total activity during M10 . In contrast, the lower MAD of the start time of M10 was associated with lower risk of dementia (cause-specific HR for Q1 vs. Q4: 0.7 [95% CI: 0.51, 0.97]). The associations persisted after further adjusting for total 24-hour activity. Our results suggest that higher intensity PA (leading to higher interdaily variability) appears protective for dementia risk, while greater inconsistency of rest-activity cycle may induce greater risk. \nAbstract citation ID: igaf122.1954 \nINTERDAILY REST-ACTIVITY VARIABILITY AND RISK \nOF DEMENTIA: THE ARIC NEUROCOGNITIVE STUDY \nKeran Chamberlin1, Lacey Etzkorn1, Anis Davoudi2, Ryan Dougherty3, Priya Palta4, Amal Wanigatunga1, Adam Spira1, and Jennifer Schrack1, 1.
