This issue addresses Puerto Ricans in New York City, explaining why many remain concentrated in the metropolis, the social re-education required for small-community acceptance, and the hope for sympathetic understanding. Ricans on the mainland are concen-trated.However,we feel sure that this issue is of more than localinterest,as the necessity of accepting Puerto Ricans into American lifeis of more than local concern. While there are approximately 600,000Puerto Ricans in greater New York, there are splinter groups in othercities from here to California.Eighteen dioceses number sizeablegroups of Puerto Ricans among their permanent residents. \nOne may wonder about the great concentration of Puerto Ricansin already overcrowded New York. Why don't they spread out overthe country, live on the land or in small towns, rather than in a giganticmetropolis?Like other newcomers before them—the Irish,Germans,Italians—they huddle together for protection, for companionship, forlove and understanding in a strange land.Puerto Ricans especially aregregarious, used to moving in a circle of one hundred or so relativesand friends. To move alone(or with one's immediate family)to anew place in the states requires a change in social habits even moreviolent than the uprooting from the island itself. But,for groups ofPuerto Ricans to be accepted into small communities requires a re-education for the residents which the native New Yorker, used totidal waves of “strangers”can pretty much do without. That is notto say that New Yorkers have wholly accepted Puerto Ricans,or toimply that they have taken them to heart.(As Catholics we reluctantlyremark that parishes in \"better\"neighborhoods of New York seemtotally indifferent to their hardships—that is,when the parishionersare not complaining of having to brush up against Puerto Ricans in thesubways.)But at least New Yorkers have recognized the fact that theyare here to stay. One can hope that this negative acceptance will giveway to sympathetic understanding and even positive approval,so thatpublic opinion will give the Puerto Ricans such a good press in NewYork that they will be able to move away from New York—intosmaller communities more conducive to health, family life and generalwell-being,as well as preservation of traditional religious values. \nWe call your attention to the review of Transformation in thisissue.Father Kelly's review is not intended to be a summary of thecontents of this book, but is,we think,a remarkable accomplishmentin expressing in a few words through direct citation the misunderstand-ing which exists between \"the Church”and \"the Government\"inPuerto Rico.Discriminating readers of INTEGRITY will see howit is possible for both parties to talk without understanding each other, and consequently,to impute unworthy motives to each other. \nfrom our readers \n# To the Editor:\n\nI have just finished reading your May issue of Integrity(on men).I certainly think you are to be congratulated on your
