highly selective. There is an abundance of “death”material. We could have devotedthe entire number to a discussion of undertaking and how it mightpossibly be reformed,in which case our writers could have waxedsatirical like Waugh and delighted our readers no end.For the highcost of undertaking is very pleasant to denounce.Practically everyoneis ready to agree it is a racket—even the people who prefer the funeralparlor with the blinking sign“air conditioned,”and the ones whocriticize Mrs.So-and-So for giving her husband such a cheezy funeral. While we aid and abet him it is very comfortable to pin all the blameon the mortician for degrading death.Yet even if all undertakers com-pletely lost their mercenary streak, would funerals automatically bereformed?Would death become the reality it should be in the Chris-tian life?We doubt it.Something deeper, more drastic has to bechanged than the high cost of burial. \nThis issue attempts to explore the \"something deeper\"”—the realityof death in itself:what it means to die, whether death is something tofear;our attitude toward our own death and the death of those we love:It should be remarked that death is a highly complex reality, and thatour reactions to it usually will be far from simple.Well-meaning re-formers of prevailing death mores have failed,we think, insofar asthey have forgotten this fact. They have, for instance, emphasized thejoyful aspect of death—“the going home to heaven”—and forgottenthat the widow who exclaims “Alleluia,my husband is dead”either didnot love her husband and should be suspected of possible homicide, oris mentally or emotionally deranged.Young apostolic Catholics who talkgleefully of “looking forward to death”indicate that either they arein excellent health and death is a remote possibility beyond the powersof their imaginings, that they have reached that summit of the spirituallife where like the saints \"they die because they do not die,\"or mostlikely of all, they have not yet attained to that fear which is the begin-ning of wisdom. \nSorrow and hope, fear and faith, pain of loss and fulfillment oflove—all these are in death.Christ Who always saw His Father's faceand knew better than anyone the reward of the just still wept that Hisfriend should die,and stopped to restore a son whose life had been lost. \nfrom our readers \n\"freedom and authority\" \nTo the
