many gifts, prominent among which was his holi-ness.It was evident to those whoattended his wake at 115 Mott Street, and his Requiem Mass at the Churchof the Transfiguration in Chinatown, that he had died a man of great pros-perity and distinction. His prosperitylay in his securing abundantly all of thethings necessary for happiness, whilebeing shorn clean ofthe stuff that thieves \ncan steal and moths consume. His claim to distinction lay in thefact that he was a Christian and that's about all. \nAs a prominent Catholic layman he toured the country manytimes. He was select in his choice of traveling companions, accepting only those thieves and publicans who were willing tolisten to his story about the kingdom of heaven and its justice. He usually traveled third-class,or as it is conventionally described—hitch-hiking.Yet he quite willingly left his beloved brethrenon many an occasion to speak to collegiate intellectuals or women'sclubs.Audiences always found his talks exciting, which is sur-prising inasmuch as his subject was inevitably Christianity. \nHis degrees were few, preferring as he did to master situationsrather than subjects. He could fire a boiler quite well or grade aroad. He had the hands of a true student, knobbed and calloused. He studied both here and abroad, and he discovered that workingconditions, human nature and the efficacy of grace were prettymuch the same the world over. \nIn spite of his preoccupation with practical problems,Mr.Maurin was not above washing his hands and reading a book ortwo.Perhaps this is what made him rejoice in the one degree hehad earned,an M.A.The initials stood for Master Agitator.Being of a simple turn of mind, after reading the letters of PopeLeo XIII,Pius X,XI and XII addressed to such persons as him-self,he took them literally and became excited about them.Thisexcitement he attempted, with success in more than one instance, \nto communicate to others. If history goes in the right direction,it is more than likely that Peter Maurin will be revered as thefather of the lay apostolate in America. \nIt is unnecessary to outline here the program of action ofwhich he was the principle proponent. He has bequeathed thistreasure to the CATHOLIC WORKER MOVEMENT and toDorothy Day who with him founded the movement in 1933.Overthe space of the past thirty-three months INTEGRITY has beenattempting to set down in broad outline and some detail the theoryof Christian revolution which Mr.Maurin felt was so necessary. However, according to his own council,we are going about it in\"our own crazy way.\"By that he meant that each of us mustbecome intoxicated with grace and make it effective within thetime and limit of our talent and opportunity, for this is the desireof the Holy Ghost.
