diffidence, realizing full well that there are doubtless many parochial problemswe have overlooked and many potentialities in the existing parish we:have neglected to mention. \nPerhaps our readers will be surprised that the issue isn't more\"radical”in advocating sweeping changes. Why,for instance, haven'twe talked about dividing the gigantic urban parish into humanly-controllable sections?Or,why haven't we mentioned anything aboutabolishing the system of permanent pastors? These are two of thechanges that are suggested whenever zealous parochial reformers get:together. \nThe omission of any specific pattern for changing the parochialsystem has been intentional.Swapping plans for “ideal parishes ofthe future”is a luxury our writers have denied themselves.Such plans if they are to have any validity—depend on a wide background ofknowledge and experience of the life of the parish.Institutionalchanges,if they are not to be premature and wasteful, need to come asthe result of organic growth. When they are entered into hastily theresults are disastrous.Old roots have been destroyed, new roots donot come into spontaneous being. \nThe advocates of advanced institutional changes often overlookthe fact that the new institutions they suggest require as a necessity aperfection on the part of the participating individuals which the oldforms allowed them to escape. This is clearly illustrated in the caseof the priest-workers,or in the new lay organizations such as the Legionof Mary and the YCW,where much more depends on the individualmembers than in a traditional Church society whose function is toplay cards and raise money. \nThe article on co-existence is not unrelated to the rest of this issue. On the contrary, the parish has to be seen against the background ofthe total crisis of our time. For it is a paradox that urges itself on thecontemporary parish that while it is the only existing social entity thatcan possibly provide the sense of community modern man needs(thesense of being known and loved,of being at home with others,of sink-ing roots where one belongs),it can fulfill this function only if itsuccessfully escapes the evils of parochialism. To the extent that aparish is closed in on itself, that it is not open to the needs of thewhole diocese,to the problems of the whole world,so does it fail tounderstand the needs of the modern man, who,in his individual rest-.lessness,reflects the universal crisis. \n以 \nx \nfrom our readers \n\"on the divorce issue\" \nTo the Editor: \nI have read your issue on divorce with great interest.... \nThere is too much demanding and not enough asking, pleading, begging in most marriages.Where a coaxing, gentle request wouldbring a glad response,a harsh order can only be obeyed with a rebelliousheart. It is pride and shyness,I think, that makes it hard for a marriedpartner to maintain a civility he would find self-evident in any otherrelationship. \nWhy do husbands and wives close themselves to each other?Ithink it comes from sensitivity. They see each other so much, are sodelivered to e","cbCaigOXN3tnG7Ya","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigOXN3tnG7Ya","pdf",2118891,52,"English","#
