This issue centers on happiness as an intangible people search for amid America’s personal and social pressures, rootlessness, and instability. It argues that happiness cannot come from inadequate goals or oversimplified claims that virtue automatically yields earthly joy. Instead, it frames mature love and Christian hope as compatible with a life shaped by faith’s limits here, emphasizing spiritual surrender, inner peace, and the recognition that heaven is not fully America have centered around a vast intangible everyoneis searching for.One can recall the unemployment during the depres-sion and the individual's feeling that he would be content once thatterrible social problem was solved. Then one remembers vividly thefollowing years and the people who felt they would have their heart'sdesire as soon as the social catastrophe called war was over. But nowthere are jobs(for the majority at least),and while the peace is a coldpeace, still families are on the whole reunited and complete. So theindividual's search is less and less centered on objects outside himself,on external conditions, and more and more centered on something with-in(what it is he does not know)he somehow hopes to attain.Andsocial thinkers likewise are showing their concern not so much for thematerial deprivations of man,but for the structure of contemporarysociety itself with its characteristic rootlessness and instability, and theheavy pressures it brings to bear upon the hapless individual—a con-formist in what has been aptly termed \"The Lonely Crowd.\" \nA glance at the best seller list(Peale's book on Positive Thinkingdiscussed in this issue has been on it for 158 weeks,How to be Happy365 Days a Year for 34 weeks),or at the ads for new books, shows thatthe market for happiness books is insatiable. They range mostly fromthe bad to the indifferent, with here and there occasional true insights. But man if he is to be happy must first know what will make himhappy;if there is nothing so sinful as maliciously pursuing an evil goal, there is nothing so tragic as attaining an inadequate goal, nothing sopathetic as a man sincerely pursuing a goal unworthy of him. \n“Mine is the whole majestic past, and mine is the glorious future”was a quotation that used to be resounded in high school oratoricalcontests, for it expressed the American dream as it supposedly appliedto American youth. But the dream has somehow faded;the past is notmuch of a reality, the future hardly more so.And young people feelwith their elders that they are stuck with a present of doubtful worth, with a sparse hope of happiness hardly attainable. But if anyone shouldaffirm the possibilities of happiness it is the Christian. This then isthe purpose of our issue. \nWe wish our readers a merry Christmas and much happiness inOur Lord. \nx \nX \n## happiness and mature Christians happy? Why is it that so many Catho-lics who apparently are trying their best to keep from grievous sinand to serve God seem no happier than the rest of the world?Whyis it they seem to share the same confusion as to the nature of happi-ness,to know the same restlessness and lack of peace? \nIn the first place it is probably safe to say that they sharehumanity's common dream of ultimate
