\neditorial \nNot too long ago we went to a lecture on confession and psycho-therapy during which we heard three surprising things:we heard con-fession compared to the new wonder drugs used to relieve the anxietyof the mentally ill;the average priest,we were told, could handle mostany case that would be referred to a psychiatrist;and the only reason aCatholic would have to resort to a psychiatrist would be that the \"priestdoesn't have enough time.\" \nThis lecture was one of the instances of general confusion thatmade it seem especially necessary to us to have an issue on Confessionand Guilt.First of all,it seems important to reiterate the supernaturalcharacter and purpose of confession, for in a well-meaning attempt toclaim everything for it(including its value as a remedy for neuroticanxiety)there is danger of naturalizing the sacrament.Confession nomore proves its efficacy by relieving emotional anguish than communionproves its value as a spiritual food because by receiving it some of thesaints could get along without any physical food. \n## guilt feelings can persist\n\nThe purpose of confession is to right what is wrong morally, torestore the soul to grace;this is its sacramental efficiency which mustnot be confused with any other effect which confession may or maynot have. For it may or may not have the effect of relieving the feelingof guilt.Whether it does or not is beside the point of its main purposeand the priest's activity as a judge who forgives sin.But the catechismteaches us that in confession the priest is not only judge, but teacher, doctor and father.Through the priest in confession the penitent ex-periences God's fatherhood along with the communication of Christ'steaching and healing power. And through these the penitent's sense ofguilt may be relieved. But feelings can persist after their cause hasceased—as a slight cause can trigger off an overwhelming emotion.Such non-objective feelings are not the sign of guilt but a temporalpunishment to be carried as a cross—alleviated by sacramental penance,or,if they are a serious obstacle to sanctity, removed by psychiatricattention. \nyou're your own judge \nThe priest as confessor is not a psychotherapist digging out hiddenor repressed guilt. He must·believe the penitent, and the penitent isthe one who himself establishes the fact of his objective guilt by makinga threefold judgment. In examining his conscience he is like a prosecu-tor who says:This is what I have done.(\"I have missed Sunday Mass.\")He makes the judgment of a jury that what he has done is morallyimputable.(\"I missed Mass willfully, with knowledge of what I wasdoing, freely and without any excuse.”)And thirdly,as the judge hepronounces sentence on his own action.(\"This willful missing of Masswas a mortal offense against God and deserving of eternal damnation.”)The only judgment the priest makes is the judgment of whether or notthe penitent shows sufficient signs of contrition and purpose of amend-ment to be pardoned,to be absolved from his sins. \nIt is indeed unfortunate if a new emphasis on the psychological, subjective effects of confession(what it does for the penitent's feelings)should obscure not only its objective effects(in righting what waswrong)but also its
