poses so many difficulties thatperhaps we can approach it obliquely by noting the attitudes of Chris-tians as they confront that aspect of the international scene embodiedin the UN.To simplify even further—we can note three differentattitudes that Catholics have adopted toward the United Nations as itexists today. \nThe first attitude—vociferously anti-UN—is that of those Catho-lics who see in the UN a dangerous alliance with Russia and at leasta tacit approval of Communism.Mixed up with their thinking usuallyis a large dose of defensive nationalism, increased in intensity by hyper-emotionalism toward what they see as the threatening plague of \"worldgovernment.\"At the best their attitude arises from a sincere patriotism,a will to defend both their country and their religion against atheisticCommunism, and a desire to take definite stand against evil withoutany equivocation. At the worst their attitude,it seems, springs from anunrealistic hope of escaping the troubles of the rest of the world, froman urge for selfish\"self-preservation.\"This attitude has never beenrevealed so clearly,we think,as recently in a Catholic diocesan weeklyin an editorial directed against world government. The writer pleadedagainst any union with the rest of the world that(he felt)wouldnecessarily reduce our standard of living, for \"in America the typicalman can come home every day, take a shower and change into a freshpair of dungarees”...Too much solicitude for the rest of the world, the editor evidently believed, might cause the American's shower tostart running cold! \nThe second attitude(and understand that we are grouping to-gether various \"sub-attitudes\"of various people in order to get theirchief and common element)is that of the pro-UN Catholics.Theyusually have studied the papal documents, know that the Pope hasencouraged any sincere efforts toward world peace, and they thereforesee in the UN a legitimate means of working toward internationalco-operation and amity.Without reserve then they see the UN as aninstitution worthy of their encouragement and in which—according totheir specific opportunities—they can participate. The pro-UN Catho-lics at their best are Christian realists who realize that the UN as itexists is not perfect, but who impelled by their desire for a temporal \norder based on love between persons and understanding between na-tions,work with the UN as an instrument providence can use forattaining world peace. They know, however, that the UN as a goodmeans is only the beginning of a solution to international tension.Attheir worst,pro-UN Catholics have sometimes used papal statements asa means of escaping further thought. In this respect they show them-selves as prone to wishful thinking as the most narrow anti-UNCatholic.For the fact that the Pope has urged world co-operation doesnot give them the right to posit world co-operation as an already exist-ing reality;neither do general directives on international peace doaway with the myriad complexities or dispense us from the necessityof
