Christians in varying ways.In a sense, the same thing can be said of Mary;shestands unchanging in herself—ever theMother of God and ever the Mother ofmen.Yet each age discovers in her truthand beauty particularly suited to itself. And Christians of the modern world turn \nto her for aid in peculiarly twentieth century problems. The factthat within a century the Church has defined two doctrines con-cerning Mary(her Immaculate Conception and, more recently, her Assumption into Heaven)gives official recognition to thetruth that men cannot overcome the ever-increasing trend towardpaganism without the aid of the Mother of God. \nThis year the Pope chose the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdesto appeal to the Romans to give themselves wholeheartedly to theChristian regeneration of their city and of the entire world.Inso doing he indirectly answered those apostolic Catholics who feelthat devotion to Mary(especially under her title of Our Lady ofFatima)somehow dissipates energy that should be given to thesocial apostolate. They are inclined to see Marian literature andPapal encyclicals as giving divergent messages—when in realitythey are complementary. For in fact no Pope would dare to gain-say Mary, and Mary on her side would be the last one to contradictthe Pope when he speaks as the Vicar of her Son! \nFalse devotion to Our Lady(that which is based on sensation-alism rather than on truth, and which is the overflow of emotion-alism rather than of charity)may perhaps blind people to thedemands for a social apostolate—but then they themselves, notOur Lady, are responsible for their blindness. But true devotionto Mary can only serve to increase the zeal, generosity and purityof intention of those who give themselves to the Christian restora-tion.We are concerned then not so much with applying theChurch's teaching on Mary directly to the apostolate as in givingthe truth about Mary and indicating various aspects of devotion toher. We think that once devotion to Mary is established on a solidbasis it should be simple for us to apply it and practice it in ourparticular apostolate as well as in our daily lives. \nTHE EDITOR \nGalilean Home \nlF we are going to
