Leveraging text-to-image and image-to-image generators (MidJourney 6, LookX) and hybrid methods with Adobe Photoshop Firefly and conventional methods such as sketching the research, embeds an exploratory experiment within a real-world landscape design case study. The tools were applied across five design phases: preliminary investigation, analysis, concept development, design refinement, and presentation. Key findings show that GenAI tools when combined with traditional methods such as manual sketching and GIS-based analysis significantly streamline early design phases by facilitating the generation of inspiration boards and concept visuals. MidJourney and LookX demonstrated potential for creating detailed renderings and rapid design variations, improving iterative workflows. However, AI’s limited spatial understanding and reliance on curated datasets pose challenges for generating project-specific technically accurate outputs. The study highlights GenAI’s capacity to enrich visual communication and amplify creative exploration. While GenAI tools cannot replace human expertise, their integration as complementary design aids fosters more dynamic and adaptive workflows. Future research will involve fine-tuning AI models using LowRank Adaptation (LoRa) to enhance their relevance to landscape architecture, addressing limitations in site-specific and context-aware content generation. \nKeywords: Artificial intelligence, AI image generators, generative AI, visual communication, text-to-image \n1 Introduction \nThis study examines the collaborative potential between landscape architects and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) . The aim of this study is to provide an applied scientific contribution to the practical and efficient integration of image-generating AI in landscape architecture while addressing its inherent limitations. The research was motivated by an existing gap in applied research, which is due to the rapid evolution of this technology. LI and AMOROSO (2023) already investigated whether AI-based tools can match or outperform traditional rendering techniques, particularly in efficiency, effectiveness, and utility. For that purpose, they compared the text-to-image GenAI Dall-E 2 and sketch-based refinement in NVIDIA GauGAN2 to traditional workflows, [e. g. in](e. g. in) Photoshop, and in a survey among professionals and academics. While AI tools excelled in speed, they lacked precision, often requiring human intervention for adjustments, especially in composition and detailing. Only one year later, Photoshop integrated GenAI and new GenAI models such as Midjourney 6 have outmatched Dall-E 2. Therefore, the goal is not to compare these techniques but to combine them in different variations for each design phase. \nThe research question asks: \n􀁸 To what extent can up-to-date AI image generators be efficiently integrated into the creation of visualizations during the design process in landscape architecture? What are the limitations? \nJournal of Digital Landscape Architecture, 10-2025, pp. 665-675. © Wichmann Verlag, VDE VERLAG GMBH ꞏ Berlin ꞏ Offenbach.
