INSIGHTS/EINBLICKECHRISTEL DILLBOHNER\n\nFOR MY MOTHER \nINSIGHTS.The word implies there is something'inside'to be discovered, found, understood. Not anintellectual process, but an intuitive one;notmathematics, but the music based on mathematicalstructures. What is 'inside'music, poetry or art is hiddenbecause it is elusive. To discover this treasure theremust be a map or signs. An artist leads the viewer intoa situation of understanding, knowing that is also thesame path which the artist took in creating the work. \nChristel Dillbohner is an explorer in her art, seeking to discover the essential core of her territory. This landscape of exploration is an interior one.It isconcerned with the emotional meaning of what shehas experienced, observed or,in the far-reachingrange of her curiosity, what she has sought in uniqueyet universal aspects of the world. The materials withwhich she works to define her views are the simplest, ranging from found objects to the basic and ancientmediums of oil paint and bee's wax. \nGrowing up in Cologne, where she was born in themid-1950s,was to be surrounded with the stillpresent ravages of a recent war.History impinged onthe present. As in other German cities years after thewar, landmarks in Cologne were still in rubble, blocksof buildings in ruins. \nIn 1984 she received her MFA degree in paintingfrom Cologne art school. In 1987 she joined her lifecompanion,Gero Leson,in Southern California whowas working towards his doctorate in EnvironmentalScience and Engineering at UCLA.Although as ayoung adult,Dillbohner traveled through much ofEurope,Turkey and Iran, living in Los Angeles was amajor cultural and visual shock after Germany. This isevident in her paintings of the time where the intensesunlight blurs into starry nighttime skies. These arerecordings of her initial visual responses to a new \nenvironment,realistic images verging on the abstract. \nTwo factors dramatically changed the course ofher work.Wandering through the alleys of Venice tofind discarded but usable furniture for her studio, atthe time located in Venice, she also found a mine ofother objects. From an overview of the city, her focuswas brought down to the broken, unwanted things ofits citizens. These were first used as subject matterfor still life paintings. To this subject matter wasadded the rusted metal objects discovered duringtravels in the surrounding desert. The next logical butunexpected step was to incorporate these objects intoassemblages.Logical, because Southern Californiahas long been the center of the art of assemblage.Unexpected, since until then Dillbohner had been apainter. From this evolved the immense body of workof painterly assemblages and paintings often basedon assemblage objects. \nThe second decisive factor in her retreat fromdepicting the colorful architectural signs and symbolsof her immediate environment was revisiting Germanyand rediscovering the past. This past included theheavy weight of European history still alive in itscenturies old buildings and the long perspective of thepeople. To this was added her own personal past insorting through trunks of memorabilia which had beenstored.Immediate family tragedy sharpened the knifeedge of passing time, death abruptly cutting the livingpresent into the past tense, changing the currentmoment into memory. \nThe first assemblage series, the 'Zeitläufte\"boxes,utilized found objects and German newspaperphotographs to exemplify the meaning of 'Zeitläufte\"or \"the movement of time.\"Felt and bee's wax, withtheir connotations of warmth and carrying forward thelegacy of Joseph Beuys'work, were also integral \n1.Über das Sammeln von HonigThe Honey Gatherers \nelements in these boxes. This was an attempt at fixingthe fleeting moment of time in much the same manneras Virginia Woolf's writings. \nThe palette of her paintings and assemblagesbecame darker, making use of deep and reflectiveblacks, colors the stains of blood and dirt, forestgreens. Her intuitive seeking which was alreadyevident in the work became mor","cbCaip21kXVj5SzL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaip21kXVj5SzL","pdf",3124399,28,"English","# INSIGHTS /
