The speaker’s devotion to service and promotion is undermined by loneliness, the relentless noise of human circulation, and fears of being discarded like waste. would enjoy.-Everything was glitter, mirrored, warm.Hidden speakers stirred air. \nWe food-gathered in the sensual swirlof conditioned sound.Everything fresh:clean,oven-ready,packaged,sweet;chocolate covered-Life's not easywe agreed, munching goodies;goodconsumers. We knew wrapped apples \nto be fresher than fruit on the bough. Each individual pea fresh picked;flash frozen. My slow flesh freezes;shrinks on bone;tree rootssurfacing through eroded earth.I dream of flesh;of bones to gnaw... \nAs a kid,I'd stare-the frontage amazing-great verticals dominating miles of country.Proud enough to steal they'd used height-impressive elevations, overwhelming aisles.Remade the soaring grace of cathedrals to suittheir trade, enhancing space with structure. \nWhat worked for religion worked for them-respect is still a fringe benefit of success.Their power, real as rain, became new faith,a complex of aisles holding the means of life. They owned land, grain, vegetables, fruit;controlled farms, acquired factories- \nbought countries wholesale.Company landmeasured out by latitude and longitude. In another age I might have been a priest, the chosen life of service, unquestioned faith:O Great Provider, who stocks our smallest wish, supply us this day with farm-fresh bread. \n## 3\n\nHis tie has changed colour twicesince the interview began. His suitsmoothly alters style as I watch.I try not to stare or look surprised \nas either action would lessen my chancesconsiderably. \n'Why?'he demands, tapping my applicationwithout moving a finger.I babble \nambitions,motivations,longings,loyalty-my eager desire to serve the company. His hair shortens fractionally.I cryunconsolably. \nHe changes sex, offers tissues, \npraises my degrees in Food Procurementand Product Enhancement;thinks promotionto shelf-filling for a trial periodis certain.Behind my tissue I smiletriumphantly. \n4 \nNo flags,no cheers;no crowds of relatives or friends,I come alone, the blinked-back tears are mine. This is no monastery-no vow of silence couldendure against the constant rush of human sound.Under the aisles,in long corridors, the seaof sound beats constantly. This store sails \non sound,is held afloat by chattering tonguesthat penetrate my cell,cabin,bedsit,room-lacking sea-legs I stagger between names. This titanic,self-contained ship now contains me,signed on for life. The manager shook my hand, welcomed me aboard-as did the under-manager \nand lesser ranks-must think I'm worth watching.Fail now and they'll recycle me in cansas cat-food.Whimsical sea-imageswash me into the foc'sle-but the bridgeis my aim-I want command of this ship:Steady as she goes!-Aye,aye,sir!","cbCaiqMQaul8jQYi","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqMQaul8jQYi","pdf",1967881,36,"English","# 1\n# 3\n# 4","[{\"question\":\"What setting dominates the poem’s opening
