\nAlternative Prayer Book of the Church of Ireland·page 10 \nInner and Outer Seasons \nA good sailor is not simply someonewho can sail a boat around a harbor on afair day,but rather someone who can sailin all sorts of places in all sorts ofweather.A good driver is not simplysomeone who can drive a car smoothlyon a straight road, but rather someonewho handles heavy traffic, sharp turns, and unexpected problems. \nmhe seasons of nature come and go一I spring, summer, fall, and winter-but what about our inner seasons, theseasons of our own hearts, minds, andspirits? For many of us,these also comeand go quickly. At one time we may bepreoccupied with some family problem,or a close relative who is ill.Anothertime, our work or business claims extraattention.Or we turn our thoughts forawhile to some association, club,or com-mittee we belong to. \nSo too,the experienced and competentChristian is one who can navigate calmor troubled waters.Like the good sailoror the good driver, the good Christiantakes advantage of experience, practice, and the advice of others.Like all compe-tent people, furthermore,Christian pil-grims need to take good care of theirequipment and know how to use it well. \nDuring Lent, and especially HolyWeek,we devote some thought to ourfaith.Easter may be a real time of joy,but then we soon have to begin planningfor summer, and we think of sitting outof doors,or visiting friends or relatives. So it goes, year after year. \nThe spiritual tradition of the churchdoes not deny the various responsibili-ties and duties which we have,or thelegitimate occasions for relaxation andpleasure by ourselves or with friends orrelatives.Christian spiritual teachingdoes point out to us,however, that inspite of all these other things,or maybeeven because of them, our spiritual jour-ney can keep on moving forward. \nWhether we are hard at work,or fish-ing on a day off, whether we must spendthe day shopping,or babysitting, orwaiting for a repair man to come fix thestove, every day can begin and end withprayer, and be punctuated by momentsof prayer as it proceeds. \nAs we grow older,we find that extrabusy times need to be especially prayer-ful.Times of crisis, decision,or tragedyare times when we especially need theadded trip to church for Holy Commu-nion.Easy and restful times becomehappier when we seek and receive divineblessing. \nIn the great variety of circumstancesof life,we have opportunities to learnmore about our work, more about otherpeople, more about all sorts of things inthe world, and more about ourselves.Allof these offer opportunities also to learnmore about God,and our journey tohim.God made all these things, and wecan learn to find God anywhere, exceptin sin. \nH.BoONE PoRTER,Editor \nChartres \nOnce on a windy noon,Cloud torn with blue,We climbed the towerWhere the great bells hungBlack in the shadow, broodingAgainst the farmland's green. When, ponderously, the bellsBegan to move, slowly to swing,Time seemed to hold its breath. And then-the firstGreat blows of soundShook the whole world,Tore at our minds-Moments of madness, panic.Caught in a storm of noise,We cowered low,But we endured,Never to be the same,Having once heardA voice, perhaps a hintOf what it is to hear God speakIn other than his quietness. \nAnne Keith \nTHELIVINGCHURCHVolume 189Established 1878 NumbeAn independent weekly recond of
