The work is described as a deliberate architectural act aimed at revealing incidental forms and topologies, while expanding Mayne’s architectural language. It links his early career ideals to continuing design interests expressed through lithographic prints, studies, and sculptural “drawdels.” The conversation highlights boundaries, control and release, chance operations, and the tension between designed and non-designed, including how ordered networks can approach chaos.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":15,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/inhabiting-the-boundary-condition-a-conversation-with-thom-mayne/677741/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/inhabiting-the-boundary-condition-a-conversation-with-thom-mayne/677741.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Rainbow Cat","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-05","2026-11-04",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":19},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What is Strange Networks, according to the conversation?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"Strange Networks refers both to Thom Mayne’s recent book and to a collective series of speculative drawings and reliefs made over many years.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"What themes are central to the Strange Networks explorations?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"The series focuses on boundaries, control and release, chance and unpredictability, fragments, and works in progress, exploring how ordered systems can resemble chaos.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"How does Thom Mayne combine chance with architectural composition?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"He treats the explorations as an exercise in combining chance operations with his developed sense of composition, producing forms and topologies he could not pre-conceive.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},677741,1793779855,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":14,"category_name":15,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":19,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":52,"language":139,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":140,"faqs":141,"seo_title":142,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":129,"read_time":143},962090769181,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_6f874abed73319feea01a86fa6f0fab8","Viola Ago \n‘Strange Networks’Inhabiting the Boundary Condition \nA Conversation with Thom Mayne \nThom Mayne, \nMemphshan ,'Strange Networks', \n2011 \nThe vitality of the work and its potential to generate architectonic combinations is infinite – a pure act of architecture. \n68 \n15542769, 2022, 2, Downloaded from \n[https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ad.2795 by Tsinghua University Library, Wiley Online Library on [05/11/2022]. Also the collective name of his series of speculative drawings and reliefs created over a number of years,‘Strange Networks’ is an attempt to reveal incidental architectural forms and topologies to expand his architectural language. Here he explains the motivation behind the book and its contents. \n69 \n15542769, 2022, 2, Downloaded from [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ad.2795 by Tsinghua University Library, Wiley Online Library on [05/11/2022]. Now in his 70s, and long past the struggles of his early practice when, faute de mieux, his architecture was primarily conceptual – drawn, not built – the interests that shape his design philosophy are still expressed in lithographic prints, studies, and the 2½ -dimensional sculptural works he calls ‘drawdels’ for their amalgamation of the techniques of drawing and modelling. The conceptual improvisations and sculptural work he creates in accidental fashion in his experiments with forms and materiality go onto influence his architecture. \nThom Mayne, \nComposite XV ll (Tian boro)‘Strange Networks’, \n2013 \n, \nopposite: The series is part of Mayne’s efforts to dislocate his architectural self and create objects, drawings and topologies that he cannot preconceive, thereby provoking new un-predetermined thoughts and forms. \nThom Mayne, Beimington , \n‘Strange Networks’, 2011 \nbelow: The ‘Strange Networks’ suite of explorations is an exercise in combining chance operations with Mayne’s highly developed personal sense of composition gleaned over decades of practice. \n70 \n15542769, 2022, 2, Downloaded from [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ad.2795 by Tsinghua University Library, Wiley Online Library on [05/11/2022].
