English, andyet immensely old,for you have to goback to Anglo-Saxonliterature to find thecourage, the individ-uality,and the rough, stubborn indepen- \nHENRY SEIDELCANBY \ndence of which the story is made. The coreof our northern civilization is here,drama-tized in indepcndent people who are fight-ing what may be the last fight against masscivilization.“Always to all eternity,”saysthe author, the spirit of independent man isdefeated again and again, but“No,”he saysdefiantly to fate. \nMr.Laxness'great book (and I use“great”defiantly twice in two paragraphs)is an epicstory of contemporary Iceland. It is a storyof our own time, with tourists and stream-lined modern girls and hardened roads andstruggles with the new economics and withthe First World War in it.But this is onlythe show of things. The reality is in Bjartur, the crabbed, obstinate sheep raiser, who hasbought his own land at last, and is going tohold it against hell and high water. He getsboth, for the valley he names Summerhousesis cursed by an old spell, and for high watersubstitute gales, snow, ice and semi-starva-tion. \nFor Iceland, settled by the Vikings, homeof the first democracy,is a spectral place. \nLife there has always been cruel, hard and onan epic scale. The men and women, whosailed in the Dark Ages to Iceland andGreenland and the coasts of America, werebitter realists who would be more at homein our twentieth century than in our nine-teenth.But whatever their crimes and theirvirtues, which were many, their scale wasbig, hcroic.Personal freedom was not anideal,it was a fact;they were disdainful ofany other success;that was what they foughtfor.Bjartur, who himself is a poet compos-ing verses in the old difficult rhythms,is justanothcr tough individualist with a thousandyears of breeding behind him. \nYou have to go back to the novels ofThomas Hardy to find such knotty,primi-tive eccentrics, and such pure types of beautyand courage,as among these tough crofters, carrying on cracker-box conversations whenthey are not out with their sheep.Just toname them is something—the Fell Kingwith his pathetic ambitions;the Bailiff, whocan keep a chew of tobacco in his cheeklonger than anyone else in Iceland;his wifewho is hot for traditional culture, but doesnot know it when she sees it;Asta Sollilja, the love child,so beautiful if you look onlyat the right side of her face, whose one loveaffair with a drunken, worthless schoolmastersweeps them both up into thc romance ofthe faraway outer world and its history. \nBut Laxness is a true novelist as well asthe maker of a people's epic. The spectralIceland always hangs over his story, and \nthings happen which no reason but only thepast can explain. The devil Kolumkulli, oncean Irish priest,is present at Summerhouses;and Gudvor, the powerful woman who livedon human blood, will not stay buried in hercairn up on the mountain. The place iscursed, but not so much by spirits as byBjartur's fight to stay an independent manin spite of bailiffs,banks,co-operativcs anda civilization built on money. This admirablebr","cbCaivf6D7Izq8q2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivf6D7Izq8q2","pdf",2556133,32,"English","# INDEPENDENT PEOPLE\n## A Review
