Wars of the Future \nWhat Is \nveryone has had an argument at one time or another.SUsually the argument is nothing more than that—anexchange of angry words. And usually the people arguingcalm down and reach some sort of agreement, perhapsguided by parents or friends.Sometimes, however, theargument can turn into a violent fight,in which one orboth people lose their tempers and hit each other \n_ _ . \nGroups of people, and even countries, can also behavethis way.Countries have differences of opinion with othercountries, which they normally try to settle sensibly andpeacefully. But every so often, these differences seem togrow, and neither side is willing to back down. And likethe people who use their fists in an argument, they mayturn to violence instead of talking. If one country choosesviolence, other countries may feel they do not have a \nAbove:When people disagree, they sometimes fight. On a global scale, this can lead \nto war.Left:An illustration depicting the 30 Years War in 17th-century Europe. \nchoice,as when Great Britain declared war on Germany inWorld War I(1939-45)in order to stop the Nazis fromtaking over Europe.' \nWars can last many years and involve many people. In the 1600s,for example, most countries in westernEurope were involved in a war that lasted 30 years.Morerecently,in the 20th century, millions of people foughteach other in two world wars. Not only did these warsinvolve many countries, but new weapons, using advancesin the fields of chemistry, biology, and physics,as well asnew technology such as computers, made the fightingeven more intense than in earlier wars. These advanceshave continued, and today's weapons are deadlier than anyseen before. \nBelow:British soldiers in Iraq use a computer to operate their command post andimprove the accuracy of rounds fired at the enemy. \nTHE SOCCER WAR \nTwo neighboring Central Americancountries,EI Salvador and Honduras, had many disagreements throughout the1960s.When their soccer teams playedeach other in a series of World Cupgames in June 1969,the sports rivalrywas the last straw. On July 14,1969,warbroke out between them. The war lastedonly four days, but it left 3,000 dead,6,000wounded,and caused $50 million indamage. There were far deeper reasonsfor fighting than simply a dispute oversoccer, but people still refer to theconflict as the\"soccer war.\" \nRUNNiNG FOR THEiR LIVES \nA long-running dispute turned intofierce fighting in 1999 in East Timor, part of an island that lies north ofAustralia.Indonesia had invadedEast Timor in 1975.Most of theislanders wanted to be independ-ent,but Indonesia used its army tomaintain control.O","cbCaibLAzoayEHIm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibLAzoayEHIm","pdf",3217113,"English","# What Is War?\n## What
