\nCurrent \nThe significant new materialfrom all sourceson the frontier problems of today \nTO THE NEW READER \n# CURRENT's STYLE\n\nIn the body of the magazine, all material to the right of thevertical rule is either direct quotation from or objective summaryof the words of the author named in the margin. \nThe source is stated at the end of each item. For readers whowould like to obtain full texts or subscribe to publications quoted, all sources are recapitulated in an alphabetical list which includesaddresses, frequency of publication, single copy and subscriptioncosts. This list is on pages 4 and 5. \n# CURRENT'S DEFINITIONS\n\nFRONTIER PROBLEMS are basic in the sense that they seriouslyaffect our democratic way of life, relevant in the sense that theytake into account new knowledge in the physical and social sciences, open in the sense that they involve unanswered questions. \nSIGNIFICANT NEW MATERIAL contains new information or newideas or comes from an unexpected source or provides a betterway of saying something. \n# CURRENT’S SOURCES\n\nCurrent's sources of material include not only newspapers andperiodicals in the U.S.and abroad, but also:academic journals andproceedings of learned societies;books, pamphlets and reportsfrom commercial publishers, universities, foundations and funds, citizen organizations and special interest groups;television andradio commentators, interviews, forums;government and inter-government sources;statements of opinion leaders. \n# READERS SERVICE\n\nThrough its Readers Service,Current makes available free tosubscribers each month a new selection of brochures and reprints, some of which are cited in the text. The list appears on the backcover. The flap on the back cover is a post card for ordering ReadersService items. \n# CURRENT’S AFFAIRS\n\nA MESSAGE TO OUR READERS \nThis is a suggestion to the subscribers who find our free ReadersService valuable. \nWe have had many offers to pay for the material. An extra chargeon the subscription price has been suggested for those readers whowant to take advantage of the service. We have also had lettersoffering a flat additional fee for getting all items each month auto-matically. \nWe greatly appreciate and reluctantly reject these suggestions. Our reasons are as follows:First, too large a portion of the addi-tional income might be eaten up by bookkeeping costs.Second,we suspect that the Readers Service is most popular among ouryounger readers, students especially,to whom any extra chargewould be a hardship.Third,we distribute this material in coopera-tion with the Library Foundation for Voluntary Organizations,Inc.,and almost all of it is made available to the foundation and toCurrent free of charge. \nThe Library Foundation is tax-exempt and its purpose is to helpfurther the task of distributing the publications of voluntary educa-tional,research and social action organizations in the United States.Because it is a small foundation and has not received nearlyenough contributions to offset the cost of distributing the materials,Current has been paying for most of the administrative, mechanicaland postage expenses involved. These costs are heavy. And,ofcourse, the more successful the Readers Service is as an edu-cational effort, the greater the costs of distribution. \nThere is a way, however,in which all readers of Current couldhelp in the distribution of the materials of the Library Foundation. This is by means of a contribution to the Library Foundation, whichwould be tax-deductible as a charitable gift. \nThe fair monetary value of the Readers Service is difficult toestimate.A reader who requested all items every mont","cbCaikUB6rsP4O6D","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikUB6rsP4O6D","pdf",3760765,68,"English","# IN THIS
