He is the doyen of Caribbean historians, a scholar of widely acknowledged international stature. In a scholarly life which has spanned half a century, his achievements are many and outstanding by any yardstick. Most of his professional career was spent at the University of the West Indies (UWI) which he joined in 1954. While there he, along with Elsa Goveia and Roy Augier primarily, pioneered the research and shaped the teaching of Caribbean history for both the secondary and tertiary levels. His The Making of the West Indies 1 (along with Roy Augier, Shirley Gordon and Mary Reckord) served to introduce generations of West Indian students to Caribbean history, and most of the post-colonial Caribbean historians were actually taught by him at UWI.  \nDouglas Hall was appointed Professor of History in 1964 and was the first West Indian to chair the Department of History. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Mona. Always keen to promote research in Caribbean history, it was under his leadership that the postgraduate programme in history at UWI was started; and as editor of both the Jamaica Historical Review and the Journal of Caribbean History, and as adviser to the Caribbean Universities Press, he constantly sought to open doors for Caribbean scholars to publish their research. A founding member of the Association of Caribbean Historians, he was elected president in 1980. The following year he retired from university life and became the first historian to be honoured with the title of Professor Emeritus at UWI.2  \nAlthough he is best known as a specialist in the economic history of the postemancipation Caribbean, the research interests and publications of Douglas Hall are considerably more diverse.
