IN HONOR OF MARY\n\nThe National Convention—as reported from headquarters \nby Catherine Jarboe \nAGREAT CONVENTION was held in Boston,November 6 to 10.Twelve hundred and sixty-nine delegates from the four corners ofour country, and hundreds upon hundreds of other women crowded thesessions, day and night,to make the 27th national convention of the Na-tional Council of Catholic Women an unforgettable occasion. \nSingly,in twos and threes,in little groups, the women went out in theearly morning to the Church of Our Lady of Victories to start each day inthe union of the Mass.It was a singular joy that the day should start in thehouse of Our Lord dedicated to His Mother, for Mary is the patroness ofthat vast federation of Catholic women's organizations which is the NationalCouncil of Catholic Women and Mary's title \"Castle of Christ\"the themeof its convention. \nThese days were dedicated in a particular manner to Mary in her MarianYear—days in which the representatives of N.C.C.W.affiliated organizationstook counsel together, considering past achievements and charting the wayahead.Monsignor Carroll, general secretary of the National Catholic Wel-fare Conference, expressed this when he said:\"You realize that it is useful,if not essential, for you, from time to time,to examine and appraise whathas been accomplished,to take a new look at the job ahead, and to renewyour purpose and your dedication to it.So you are gathered here in thisconvention, somewhat in the spirit that pervades a retreat,to look back andthen to look ahead.Assuredly,it is a happy and a blessed circumstance thatbrings you—pledged to be Christ-bearers of the modern era—togetherduring the Marian Year, when the Church mirrors before the world, asperhaps never before in history, the model of all Christ-bearers,Our BlessedLady.\" \n—Varied attendance at convention \nAll of the days and all of the work of the National Council of CatholicWomen are placed in the hands of Mary, for the purpose of her life and theaim of the N.C.C.W.are one—the bringing of Christ to the world.Thisconvention was a great manifestation of the work of the Church—Christ'sMystical Body—in the world today.Bishops, priests, and laity stood to-gether in a public demonstration of the life of the Church—the teachingoffice of the hierarchy, the intercessory and counselling function of the clergy, the carrying of Christ into the market place of lay men and women. \nNot only was this apparent to the people of Boston, but it reached tothe farthermost corners of our country, indeed beyond the boundaries of theUnited States to people everywhere. \nFor women had come from practically every state in the Union andwere taking the message of the convention home to their organizations andtheir communities. \nBishops and priests were there in numbers, showing to all, even tothose behind the Iron Curtain, the concern of shepherd for sheep.Arch-bishop Cushing of Boston,Episcopal Chairman of the Lay OrganizationsDepartment,N.C.W.C.,and host to the convention, thanked his brotherbishops and brother priests for their attendance in such numbers, workingwith those for whose spiritual well-being each was charged, and showingtheir recognition of the fact that those who would strike at the Church, strikefirst at the shepherd,to separate him from his flock. \nFor the first time in the history of N.C.C.W.conventions,the Presidentand members of the Bureau of the World Union of Catholic Women'sOrganizations were present from foreign lands. The President,Mlle.duRostu, addressed an evening meeting, and others participated in the Inter-national Relations Work Group, bringing their thinking and their other-nation experience and taking back to many lands an extensive knowledge ofCatholic work in the United States which would have taken months oftravel to obtain. \nThe Presid","cbCaiqCdOVIJXGGO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqCdOVIJXGGO","pdf",542710,12,"English","# In Honor of Mary\n##
