Prudence\n\nI've decided to write a short treatise on Prudence. \nNowadays there arises from many quarters the call for caution,modera-tion,restraint,all in the name of prudence.Whether the area is civilrights, the liturgy, the layman, international tensions,we are warned ofthe danger of haste, counseled on the necessity of more study, morewaiting.I've even read where some consider that Pope John's calling ofthe Vatican Council was a too hasty decision. The battle cry of the so-called prudent ones is \"wait,\"\"let's consider,\"\"don't be rash.\" \nSo,back I went to the master,St.Thomas,to see what he had to sayabout the virtue of prudence. There are some forty pages of the Summa(II,II,Q.49 to 56)devoted to the subject,so I have no intention ofgiving a complete breakdown of his treatment. But I found what I waslooking for the chapter which treats of the principal parts of the virtue. \nBy way of introduction,St.Thomas tells us that prudence is supposedto govern our practical life, the things that have to get done here and now. \nA little while later,he asks the question,\"What is the principal actof the virtue of prudence? Is it to command?”To put it in our languageif a man never says,\"let's go,this is what we're going to do now,\"thatman is imprudent;he's missing a part, the main part,of prudence.Thereasoning of St.Thomas is pretty clear.Prudence is a virtue of our prac-tical reason. For a prudent act, three things are needed.First is informa-tion—the facts,as we say,and this includes asking for advice, research, study;and the more serious the problem to be solved, the more intensethese should be.Next comes judgment based on the facts,a judgmentwhich says that this or that is the best course of action.Finally,continuesSt.Thomas,comes the command which consists in applying to action the \nthings counseled and judged and this is the principal part of prudence. \nTo keep the record straight, let me point out that St.Thomas treats ofeight qualities belonging to prudence(he calls them quasi-integral parts, which means you're not fully prudent unless you've got all of these too). \nThey are:memory(you shouldn't make the same mistake too often);understanding(a prudent man needs brains to decide logically);docility(the man who thinks he knows it all will never consult);shrewdness(bythis St.Thomas means the ability to grasp quickly what should be done);reason(you have to proceed logically);foresight(to allow you to seefurther than your nose);circumspection(make sure you look
