The narrative confronts sexual assaults by a step-father and frames personal trauma through the wider social wounds of the Rhondda. were two things I'd never experiencedin my home valley. One,a female literary voice from the Rhondda. Two,a writer who dared to expose the darkness, dysfunctionand despair that can exist beneath the warm clichés of communitylife to which we still cling. \nIt was an uncomfortable yet entirely necessary epiphany.Herewas I,a valley girl contentedly exiled in Cardiff, reflecting on theRhondda at arm's length.Proud of its past.Unwilling to concedesome of the more difficult realties of its present. \nMy Rhondda was steeped in the nostalgia of family history. Not that these tales were cute and cosy,of course. The minergrandfathers I never knew, both dead in their 5Os-one claimedby dust, the other paralysed in a pit accident. The grandmotherwho saw four of her twelve children die before their sixth birthdayand whose life was consumed by the relentlessness of domestictoil. \nBut our Rhondda narrative was selective. It was built on lookingbackwards at the nobility of the men and women who enduredthat hardship and saw education as the escape shaft andcommunity kinship as their survival strategy. \nWhen I was growing up in 197Os Llwynypia, there was a bookon my parents'shelf that explored these valleys values and shapedmy rear-view-mirror perspective.Called Rhondda Past and Present, this large tome had a poignant picture of a coal-covered 12-year-old collier on the dust jacket and contained twelve essays and aletter to the then Secretary of State for Wales. \nEntirely written by men,the essays had grown out of a seriesof lectures held in the early 1970s at the new Treorchy \ncomprehensive -where Rachel would be a pupil two decadeslater.Though the title said Rhondda Past and Future, the divisionwas not equal. The book was dominated by history rather thancurrent affairs. \nAs the introduction stated, the lectures tried to capture thedetail of“that Rhondda experience, the long bitterness of theDepression, the struggle between worker and capitalist, the placeof the chapel and choral singing, the clash of politics, the stubbornfight to provide secondary schools, the influence of the Workmen'sInstitutes, the humour, the pride, the compassion of ordinarypeople.” \nOnly the final two chapters grappled with the challenges ofpost-industrial valley life. And though the essay entitled“Planninga Future for Rhondda's People”outlined some stark statistics onunemployment, deprivation and a growing housing crisis, therewas still a reluctance to articulate the inevitable social problemssuch factors caused. \nThe sensitivity of the author in the face of outside criticism wasclear:“The television programmes on the Rhondda tend to over-emphasise the deprived nature of the community -they showstreams that have old cars in them rather than those that havenot. They show the worst of the old housing rather than the best. They stress the worst of the community life
