Around 90 students are studying the subject at Cambridge Lower Secondary and 125 at Cambridge IGCSE™ level. Most of the learners are Vietnamese. \nLearners study a range of global issues – such as climate change, environmental sustainability, artificial \nintelligence, social media, education, health and wellbeing, and cultural identity. \nThe school believes that Cambridge Global Perspectives is not only about understanding the world; it also encourages students to develop a deep appreciation of Vietnam’s history, culture and traditions. By exploring global issues through both local and international perspectives, students strengthen their sense of identity while becoming confident and responsible global citizens. \nAs they explore these issues, the learners develop transferable skills such as critical thinking, research and collaboration. But the school has found this subject has another key benefit too – it has been instrumental in developing students’ English proficiency. \nContinued \nImproving bilingual students’ English through teaching Cambridge Global Perspectives™ continued \nBuilding students’ confidence in using English \n‘Students have investigated topics from local, national and global perspectives, often comparing how different communities are affected by the same issue – such as plastic pollution,’ says the school’s Cambridge Global Perspectives teacher Josiah Ching Yi-Xiang. ‘Most importantly, the students reflect on their own experience and the knowledge they have acquired to enhance their understanding and perception.’ \nTalking about their own history and culture takes away a lot of the stress of speaking a new language, says Josiah. \n‘Students feel like experts and focus more on sharing their story than worrying about perfect grammar – this pride makes them much more excited to speak up and use their English in class.’ \nThe added benefits of teamwork \nMuch of the learning in Cambridge Global Perspectives is done as group work, which includes working with students around the world. Students are also required to make presentations on the issues they explore. \n‘Working in groups gives students a confidence boost because they are constantly sharing ideas,’ says Josiah. \n‘Every student also has to stand up and explain their research to the class. This regular practice helps them \novercome their fear of making mistakes and makes talking in English feel much more natural. It transforms English from a passive subject into an active tool for research, critical analysis and debate.’ \nAt Cambridge IGCSE level, students are assessed on three components: a written exam, a team project and an individual report. For the team project, each group chooses from a topic list and identifies a local issue. \n‘Collaborative elements like the team project elevate students’ oral confidence by requiring them to clearly articulate and defend their own viewpoints before an audience,’ says Josiah. \nImproving written English and vocabulary \nThe team project includes a personal element, for which students must write a reflective paper on their research, their contribution to the team ele","cbCaijA658rJyRBx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijA658rJyRBx","pdf",2751330,"English","# Improving bilingual students’ English through teaching Cambridge Global Perspectives™\n## Building students’ confidence in using English\n## The added benefits of teamwork\n## Improving written English and vocabulary\n## Offering students access to more sources\n## Strategies to support language development","[{\"question\":\"How does Cambridge Global Perspectives improve students’ English at Nguyen Sieu School?\",\"answer\":\"It combines bilingual education with topic-based learning so students use English actively while exploring global issues, develop speaking and writing confidence, and build advanced vocabulary through tasks like team projects and individual reports.\"},{\"question\":\"What transferable skills do students develop through this subject?\",\"answer\":\"Students develop critical thinking, research and collaboration by investigating complex issues, comparing perspectives, presenting findings, and defending viewpoints in discussions.\"},{\"question\":\"How is assessment structured at the Cambridge IGCSE level for this subject?\",\"answer\":\"Assessment includes a written exam, a team project, and an individual report; the team project involves choosing topics and identifying local issues, while the individual report requires researching a global issue from multiple perspectives and reflecting personally.\"}]","Improving bilingual students’ English through teaching Cambridge Global Perspectives | PDF",1792728261]
