theirspeaking and listening skills as well as teachingthem how to organise their ideas in a logicalfashion.The reasons for teaching formal speakingprocedures are discussed in addition to suggestionson how to organise an impromptu speaking lesson.Examples of topics and speech frameworks aregiven along with suggested preliminary exercisesto help the student understand the mechanisms ofan impromptu speech.A suggested critique sheetis also outlined and explained.this helps studentsorganise both speech development and listeningcomprehension.In addition,some of the mostcommon formal speaking difficulties are discussedand different solutions are suggested.Finally,theimprovements expected from this speaking exer-cise are outlined.  \nImpromptu speaking is a much neglected tool to aid theadvanced second language speaker in skills such as thoughtorganisation and development.It improves the student'sability to communicate effectively on all levels and generates  \npoise and spoken English andlistening comprehension and,therefore its principal objec-tives are fluent and accurate speaking skills.  \n## WHAT IS IMPROMPTU SPEAKING?\n\nImpromptu speaking is a relatively simple formal speakingexercise of a limited duration of time and with limitedformal preparation.  \n## WHY TEACH A FORMAL SPEAKINGTECHNIQUE?\n\nWhile students create sequential statements effortlessly intheir native language and even in English conversation,theyoften feel inhibited in speaking English in a formal circum-stance.The aim of any of the formal speaking techniquessuch as extemporaneous speaking,oratory or debate,isnot only to teach English communication but also to teachthe students to develop their thoughts logically and todeliver these thoughts in a clear and concise way.Surpris-ingly enough,though students attempting this exercise arealready advanced,for many it will be the first time theyhave actually given a \"formal yet unprepared\"speech inEnglish.Such speaking exercises teach the student thedifference between formal and conversational English.Theyencourage the development of an extensive and appropriatevocabulary and they develop culturally appropriate use ofgesture and body language as well as teaching students tothink and speak in an organised and logical manner.  \n## HOW TO ORGANISE AN IMPROMPTUSPEAKING LESSON\n\nFirst,the teacher must explain what impromptu speakingis and then outline the speaking procedure,i.e.establish the  \n## Impromptu Speaking as a Tool\n\nrules.The rules are briefly,as follows:a student is given thechoice of two topics which have not been seen previously.The student has thirty seconds to choose a topic.Then,one,two or three minutes should be allowed for the thinking andwriting that constitutes the preparation.The optimum pre-paration time is one minute(three minutes is for very slowstudents).The choice of time is at the teacher's discretion.  \nImpromptu is disarming in its seeming simplicity.It isdifficult enough for a native speaker to give a unified andlogically developed talk on a topic of consequence.Secondlanguage speakers therefore,need to be concise,methodicaland
