The work focuses on “domestic annals” of the County and City of Perth, drawing largely on older sources and newly printed documents and excerpts. columns ofthe Perthslire Constitutional and Journal, from 3dNovember,1873,to 14th September,1874,and havethence been reprinted in this permanent form.Theydeal with subjects lying generally out of the beatentrack or broad highway of history;in other words, they are meant to illustrate(though in 8ome casesincidentally)various points and circumstances concern.ing what may be termed the“domestic annals”of theCounty and City of Perth.Strict originality is notclaimed for them;nor could it be expected:they aremostly careful compilations from works which do notcommonly fall under the eye of the general reader:and, according to Chaucer's dictum (in the Assembly ofFoules),indebtelness to such authorities can be ac-counted no disparagement:一 \nFor out of the old fieldes,as men saith, \nCometh al this newe corne fro yere to yere; And out of olde bokes,in goed faith, \nCometh al this newe science that men lere. \nBut this,at least, may justly be claimed, that severalold-fasbioned and interesting documents and many ex-cerpts have been printed in this series for the first time:tbe Laws of the Chapmen, the Laws of the Glovers, theVisitation of the Church of Perth, and numerous otherextracts from MS.sources:which curious memorials ofpast generations will,it is hoped, impart a value to theCollection which otherwise it would have lacked. \nCONTENTS. \n1.Chapman Life in RoderickRandom, afforded far slower means of transport forgoods and pasengers, from town to town, along themain lines of road,—and when pack-horses were em-ployed to convey merchandise through parts of thecountry destitute of anything like regular roads, andtherefore impervious to wheeled vehicles. The pack-horses,ładen with heavy sacks, travelled in troops,一each troop ranged in single file, and the foremost beastcarrying a bell, tbe jingle of which kept the rest fromstraying oif the track during a night-journey;and thisprimitive system was not wholly abandoned in certaindistricts of Scotland sooner than abont the year 1780,when it was superseded by the use of carts. The daysof bad roads were those in which a large body of itine-rant traders reaped full harvest. We allude to thepedlars—the
