The narration shifts into intimate domestic detail, revealing deliberate actions, practiced routines, and unspoken intent as one character prepares coffee and watches the other move through the morning. The text establishes emotional pressure, moral tension, and an atmosphere where words—especially the vow “I’ll never tell”—carry more weight than explanation.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright © 2026 by Papyrus Publishing LTD. \nAll rights reserved. We’re running on the faint returned light from the cloud above – enough to see the shapes of things, the vertical bars of the trees, each other ’s faces as pale and indistinct as the sky. The mud has come up past my wrists. I can feel it tightening as it dries, the fine particles in the creases of my knuckles. Fiona’s arms are dark to the elbow, and she’s staring down at the turned earth and she’s very still. \nI glance at her. The chestnut hair comes loose from where she’d tied it back, a streak of mud across her jaw she hasn’t noticed or has noticed and doesn’t care about. The hazel eyes fixed downwards. I have loved this woman since I was nineteen years old and there is nothing I know better than her face in extremity – the way it goes quiet when it should go loud, the way it finds its stillness under pressure the way water finds its level. I look at it now and I feel the full weight of what we are standing on top of, and I mean that in every sense available. \nShe says it first. \n‘I’ll never tell.’ \nHer voice is barely above a breath. Three words, hardly voiced, shaped more than spoken. The woods don’t echo. The words go out, and the darkness takes them, and there’s a moment of absolute stillness – the trees, the earth beneath us, the cloud-lit nothing of the sky above. \nI say it back. \n‘I’ll never tell.’ \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nChapter 1 \nFiona \nI MAKE his coffee wrong on purpose. \nThree heaped spoonfuls of the Italian roast is what he takes – strong, opaque, the kind that costs more than it should and which we buy anyway because we have become, without ever discussing it, people who spend money on coffee. What I give him instead is the decaf we bought for my mother ’s last visit, the tin kept at the back of the cupboard behind the teabags. Same colour in the mug. Different in every way that matters. \nThe ceiling shifts and settles above me, the weight of him moving from bed to bathroom, the house offering its commentary. His alarm went off eight minutes ago. He lies there for at least three before getting up; I’ve never once heard him spring out of bed. I know the exact sequence: alarm, the pause, the mattress creak, the groan of the bathroom door. I could set my watch by him. \nI lean against the worktop with both hands wrapped around my mug and arrange my face and wait. \nHe appears in the doorway in his work shirt, still half-tucked, hair flattened on the left from sleep. The grey at his temples has been spreading since last winter – more than he’s noticed, less than he’d want to know about.
