I couldn’t do life without you, nor would I want to. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \n‘He who has a why to live for, can bear almost any how.’ \n–Friedrich Nietzsche \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nPROLOGUE: BLESSED WITH \nBLEEDING LUNGS \nI was staring at the ceiling of a hospital emergency room. The obnoxious, unrelenting sounds of medical machinery jolted me back into reality like a defibrillator waking a sleeping heart. \nI’d spent the best part of an hour questioning how on earth I had found myself lying in yet another hospital bed with a plastic name tag on my wrist and some form of intravenous liquid coursing through the cannula wedged deep into my veins. Dried blood stained my chest, my lungs ached, and the paper-like bed sheets were doing little to warm my cold and broken body. \nPatients lay to the le֕ and right of me. Some of them looked and sounded like they wouldn’t see life on the outside again. And all of them wore an expression suggesting there were places they would much rather be. \nMy eyes followed the doctors and nurses pacing from one end of the emergency room to the other, life slipping between their fingersas they frantically fl ipped through years of patient history and clinical notes within the files at the foot of each bed. I could see \ndoctors scratching their chins in uncertainty. Others were engaged in conversation, digging through the files in search of clues to solve the mystery of life or death presented in the patient before them. I could also see that not all my fellow patients were such a mystery; the rigid posture and helpless eyes of their doctors suggested a lack of hope, or a bleak certainty, that they would now have to accept. \nTo many, this existential environment could hold the feeling of imminent death. To me, seldom had I felt more alive than I did in that moment. \nThe fragility of this environment reeked not of death, but of life. Life hanging in the balance, begging for one more go around, negotiating with what we know we should have done and promise todo, if we could get just one more chance at this beautiful dance we call life. \nThese moments felt honest. The facial expressions and body language of my fellow patients couldn’t be dressed up, no matter how hard they tried. Eventually, their truth became obvious, there for everyone to see. \nNobody fakes it till they make it out of a hospital bed. \nI closed my eyes in an effort to recall the events of the morning. I remembered waking to the sound of my alarm. It was still dark as I opened one eye to peer out my bedroom window at the quiet street, which would be bustling with cars and pedestrians in just a few hours’ time. \nFor a runner deep in marathon prep, early Sunday morning usually meant one thing: hours dedicated to a long, exhausting run. As consistent as Catholics flocking to church for Mass, my Sunday service consisted of black coffee, electrolyte drinks and shitty energy \ngels that made me feel awful but sustained the misery of my screaming legs long enough to clock adequate time on feet. \nAs always, I was determined to get out the door for a run with my mates. Most mornings, whether we were running or not, a group of us would meet [6 a.m. at](6 a.m. at) North Wollongong Beach. The ritual and accountability of this shared effort made the discipline of the early mornings a lot easier. \nOn this morning, however, my lungs had other ideas. \nForcing my second eye open and rolling out of bed, I felt my chest immediately tighten, like","cbCaitdhbWCDu02n","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitdhbWCDu02n","pdf",29997098,3,236,"English","en",105,"# Prologue: Blessed with Bleeding Lungs\n## A hospital emergency room\n## The morning that turns urgent\n## Cystic fibrosis and the call for help","[{\"question\":\"为什么叙述者在急诊室里感到自己异常清醒？ （I Wrote My Own Eulogy） - Bradely Dryburgh | PDF",1786106272,363,{"code":4,"msg":31,"data":32},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":33,"title":13,"keywords":34,"description":14,"schema_data":35,"social_meta":86,"head_meta":88,"extra_data":90,"updated_unix":28},"i-wrote-my-own-eulogy-bradley-dryburgh","",{"@graph":36,"@context":85},[37,53,68],{"@type":38,"itemListElement":39},"BreadcrumbList",[40,44,48,50],{"item":41,"name":42,"@type":43,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":45,"name":46,"@type":43,"position":47},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":49,"name":12,"@type":43,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":43,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/i-wrote-my-own-eulogy-bradley-dryburgh/129500/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":41,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-31","2026-08-07",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71,77,81],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"为什么叙述者在急诊室里感到自己异常清醒？" ,"https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":87,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":89,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":92},[93,96,100,104,109,114,119,124,129,132,136],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},90,"story-novel",{"id":47,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":105,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":110,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":115,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
