ROVEcOLLEGETRCT.MICHAN \nEA.DdNOTOVE \na \nfeITAUGHT SCH00L FOR THE COMMUNISTS \n0乙人 \nMAY 1955/25c \nIn the days of the early Church, the water used at Baptism wasblessed by the Bishop, who thenbaptized the first Catechumens andthen confirmed them by making thesign of the cross on their foreheadswith holy chrism. The newly baptizedthen proceeded to the Church wherethey participated in the entire Massfor the first time and received HolyCommunion. All three Sacramentswere received during the night pre-ceding the day of Easter Sunday. \nThrough the years have comechanges.Baptisms, administered en-tirely by the priests, occur through-out the Church year because of theirgreat number and the desirability ofearly Baptism for infants.First HolyCommunion is still traditionally heldin the spring of the year, and theChurch tries to keep the ceremonyof Confirmation as near to it as pos-sible.To keep a truer order,it is \neven desirable to have it precedeFirst Holy Communion as in theearly days of the Church. \nConfirmation is probably the leastunderstood of the seven sacraments, and many popular conceptions of itare not quite accurate. \nIt is often called the\"Sacramentof the Holy Ghost,\"in that it invokesthe Third Person and His gifts of \nFOR LIFE \nstrength.This does not imply thatthe Holy Ghost has not dwelt in thebody of the individual before thistime, for indeed He has been presentfrom Baptism. It does mean howeverthat He comes with very specialgraces that distinguish these giftsfrom those of Baptism. \nBut,first let us find when it wasfirst separated from Baptism as aseparate ceremony. Here we find arefreshingly clear mention of it inSacred Scripture in the Acts of theApostles. The deacon Philip preachedin a city in Samaria and convertedmany and baptized them. The Apos-tles heard the good news and sentPeter and John“...that they mightreceive the Holy Ghost. For He wasnot as yet come upon any of them:but they were only baptised in the \nconfirmation:par \nthe strength to be good members ofthat family. The special gifts of theHoly Ghost in the Sacrament of Con-frmation grant us the strength to be\"witnesses\"to Christ before theworld,in the face of disbelievers.Confirmation is often called the in-dividual Christian's“Pentecost,\"forwhereas Baptism entitled the personto membership in the Church andmade him an \"heir of Heaven,\"Con- \nname of the Lord Jesus. Then theylaid their hands upon them, and theyreceived the Holy Ghost.\"(Acts 8:14-17) \nEven in the days of the Apostleswe see that time and space haveseparated Baptism and Confirmation, with the latter reserved to theBishops, which the Apostles were.In the Eastern Church, priests have \n# MATURE STRENGTH\n\nfirmation gives him the grace to\"proclaim\"his faith to the world.IfBaptism made us“children”of God,then Confirmation makes us\"adults.\" \nthe power of administering Confir-mation,and this is usually done atthe time of Baptism. In some coun-tries the age of those confirmedvaries by custom. But the overallpractice of the Church is to admin-ister it when the individual reachesthe age of the use of reason. \nIt is enriching to meditate on thesethoughts.Often we forget,or thinklittle of the“once only”sacraments.Yet,if these sacraments, like Con-firmation,are given only once,it isbecause their effects last a lifetime. It is but for us to remember and callagain on the special graces given atthe time of reception, that have re-mained with us continually. \nUnderstanding that the Sacramentof Confirmation is the“Sacrament ofthe Holy Ghost,\"yet knowing thatthe Holy Ghost has been presentsince Baptism, what are the specialeffects of it that distinguish it fromthe other six sacraments, and espe-cially from Baptism? \nVery especially in our modernworld with its highly developed op-position to the Church and challengeto Catholic life, the mature strengthwe need is especially fortified by thegraces we received in the Sacramentof Confirmation.VV \nThe Sacrament of Baptism madeus, among other things, members ofthe Christian Co","cbCaigJs9p0rCfP4","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigJs9p0rCfP4","pdf",2202805,"English","# MATURE
