The kind that forces your windshield wipers on full blast, yet still makes you slow down and squint through the streaks of water hammering the glass.  \nI had just crossed the Astoria-Megler Bridge into the thick, dark forests of southern Washington, heading toward a remote camping spot near Naselle with my daughter. The storm had come in fast, and by the time we were deep into the winding backroads, the rain was coming down in sheets.  \nVisibility was nearly nonexistent when we started up a long, steep hill. The headlights barely cut through the downpour, but as we crested the incline, something appeared in the road ahead. It looked like there was aman standing dead center in the lane.  \n“Mom, what’s he doing?” my daughter asked.  \nI didn’t know. He was motionless. His shoulders were hunched, and his head was tilted slightly downward as if staring at the asphalt beneath him.  \nThen, just as I opened my mouth to say something, he changed.  \nThe shift wasn’t natural. One second, he was standing there, the next his spine twisted forward at an impossible angle, his limbs contorting as he collapsed onto all fours. The rain blurred the details, but in a blink, what had been a man was now what I could only describe as a massive black dog.  \nMy daughter gasped as my hands clenched the steering wheel. I was trying to stay calm, but my heartbeat was hammering against my ribs. The thing in the road was watching us . It had the build of a massive German Shepherd, but significantly bigger. Its fur clung tight to its skin, emphasizing a powerful, unnatural frame. I had been around enough large dogs in my life to know this wasn’t a normal domesticated canine.  \nThen, from the opposite side of the road, another vehicle pulled up. An old truck. A man leaned out the window, peering toward me through the storm.  \n“You see that thing?” he yelled.  \n“Yeah,” I replied, unknowing of what else to say in the heat of the moment.  \nHe nodded and turned his attention to the creature.
