They’d lasted maybe two hundred before the left sole started peeling away from the upper, and by the time he crested the last hill on the eastern road, he was walking with a slap-drag rhythm that made him sound like a drunk horse.  \nBelow him, the Reedlands spread out in every direction,flat and threaded with silver waterways that caught the afternoon light. And there, sitting in a shallow valley between two lines of half-drowned willows, was his tavern.  \nHoppin’ Around.  \nHe’d bought it sight unseen from a debt-collector in the capital who’d laughed when Jackson laid down the coin.“You’re buying a ruin in a swamp, son,” the man had said, stamping the deed with ink that smelled like old fish.“But your money spends the same as anyone’s.”  \nJackson had taken the deed and walked east without looking back. Three weeks ago. A lifetime ago.  \nNow he stood on the hill and looked at what his money had bought.  \nThe building was larger than he’d expected. Two stories, timber frame, a wide porch that wrapped around the front and one side. The hop field behind it stretched north in ragged rows, trellises leaning, bines tangled and wild, half the poles snapped or rotted through. The kilns beyond the field were dark shapes against the tree line.  \nA small hut sat beside them, its door hanging open. But the chimney had smoke coming out of it.  \nThin smoke. Cooking smoke.  \nJackson’s hand went to his sword hilt. Not because he wanted to fight—he was done with fighting—but because three weeks on a road teaches your hand to move before your brain catches up.  \nThen he went down the slope.  \nThe path was overgrown but still there, pressed into the earth by years of feet that no longer came this way. Wildflowers had taken over the edges in purple and yellow, tough little things that grew where nothing else bothered.
