It was too late for my dear wife and my little daughter, but not for me; my mind could be transferred into a fully mechanical body. \nI don’t know whether I should be glad about that or whether I’d rather be dead. It doesn’t matter; what’s done is done. I can’t even end my life. The firmware prevents such actions. I also have a compelling urge to track down the driver and make him pay, which in turn gives me a sort of will to live. \nMolluscs – the people who would rather have stayed as they were – find themselves unwittingly looking up to the toasters. They are the ones who can travel through space and get all sorts of well-paid jobs. Over the last two hundred years, that difference has led to the emergence of a caste system with three main castes: humans, Hybro’s and robots. Commonly known as Molluscs, half-humans and toasters. \nNaturally, there are also sub-castes among the half-humans and toasters. It couldn’t be anyother way. The Molluscs, on the other hand, are more united than ever. As a Robot, you can’t walk down the street without children throwing things at your head. What a world … \nI work as an electronics engineer and now have the pleasure of repairing satellites. It pays very well, but money is worth less when you ’re made of metal. You’re no longer happy with a new watch or a new car. They’ve all just become tools. On the other hand, I can still enjoy a good film. Especially the classics from the twenty-first century. Five hundred years ago, life was very different. There was more nature, and life seemed a lot more real. \nTo be honest, I am pleased with the enhancements. New muscles, to make you stronger, are simply unaffordable, though. But better sensors are also in demand. I have sub-top-class eyes because I needed them for my work, and they were paid for by SatTech, the company Iwork for. When you get an enhancement, it takes an incredible amount of getting used to. \nBut when your functions are expanded, it gets really difficult and not everyone manages to use them. When I started working out, at one point I was able to move my chest muscles independently of one another, but not everyone learns that extra movement. \nThe only thing I can’t stand watching is science fiction films. They had absolutely no idea what the future would bring. Absolutely no idea at all… \nThere is one advantage to life as a robot, though. For instance, I can block out the noise of the city. I can do this with noise cancellation or by switching off my hearing completely. I still have to sleep and eat, though. My brain is still human, but something has been modified ata molecular level so that it lasts forever. Forever… I’m still getting used to the idea. \nAnd that’s not even mentioning the fact that I’ve had a camera, communication devices, the internet, and a bit of other kit built in. OK, that does have its advantages every so often. \nThe oldest Robot was four hundred years old, but he managed to end his life without the firmware realising. He destroyed an electronic component when he flew his ship towards the sun. He was there to repair an energy generator, but afterwards the ship couldn’t stop, and he flew straight into the sun. \nRobots produced before his time had a limited lifespan, though it was slightly longer than that of a human. These days, people also live a good deal longer than they did four hundred years ago. If you look after yourself properly, you can live to be one hundred and fifty. \nAnd let’s not talk about the political parties. Elections are coming up soon, and there are posters everywhere featuring Carpathian heads, regardless of caste. Given that the Robots are in the majority, it’s a foregone conclusion who will come out on top.
