It introduces blood pressure as the force blood exerts on vessel walls and describes how health workers check it using a cuff and stethoscope. Through characters learning about a neighbor’s stroke, the narrative emphasizes that high blood pressure can be “the silent killer,” highlights risk factors like salt, smoking, alcohol, and inactivity, and encourages regular monitoring and lifestyle changes.","HypertensionHigh Blood Pressure \nEnglish Health \nHypertensionHigh Blood Pressure \nStory by Marlene Custer \nReference source for medical information: [http://kidshealth.org](http://kidshealth.org)[ ](http://kidshealth.org)/en/parents/hypertension Illustrations: Art of Reading \nEnglish \nUSA \nArt of Reading illustrations are cc by-nd. \nCopyright © 2017, Marlene Custer \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. They had attended a talk at the health clinic. \"I never thought about blood pressure before,\" said Sophie thoughtfully. \n\"Being checked is so easy,\" replied Maggie.\"I wish I could talk my Timo into having his blood pressure checked. Sometimes he has bad headaches, and I know he smokes too much.\" \n\"Well, I'm going to share with William what we learned. There is no sense in waiting for a stroke or heart attack to happen before doing anything about it.\" \nThat evening Timo sat down to a supper of pumpkin soup and vegetables. Maggie gave him time to eat a bowl full before she started sharing about her day. \n\"Sophi and I went to the health clinic today. There was a special class on hypertension. Aman across the lake had a serious stroke last month and it damaged his brain. He cannot even talk now. The teacher, Mr. Buhari, said that it could have been prevented if he had been having his blood pressure checked regularly.\" \n\"Blood pressure?\" asked Timo. \"What is that?\" \nMaggie was pleased he asked. \"It is the pressure or force that blood puts on the walls of blood vessels and arteries when the heart pumps. It is easy to check. The health care worker wraps a cuff around your upper arm and inflates it until it feels tight. Then the pressure is released. The worker listens to your blood flow through a stethoscope.\" \n\"Did you let them check yours?\" \n\"Yes, and mine is fine.\" \n\"Well, I feel fine most of the time.\" \n\"Mr. Buhari said you don't have to have any illness before a stroke happens. High blood pressure is often called 'the silent killer',\"Maggie replied. \n\"I'm pretty young yet,\" insisted Timo. \n\"Age can be a factor, but there are other things that can cause high blood pressure, too. \nBeing overweight, not exercising enough, eating too much salt, smoking, or drinking too much alcohol are all contributors.\" \nMaggie was pleased she could remember so much of the talk. \nThe next day Sophi saw Maggie working in her vegetable garden. \"Did you hear? Mr. Buhari is coming here to our village. He is going to talk about high blood pressure and check anyone that wants to be checked.\" \n\"Oh, that is wonderful,\" exclaimed Maggie. \"I hope I can get Timo to listen.\" \n\"I'm pretty sure William will take time to hear him,\" Sophi responded. \nBy the time Mr. Buhari came to the village, Timo had heard the village chief talking about the man across the lake that had had a stroke. \n\"He can't talk, he can barely walk, and can't work with the other men at all. It is so sad to see him. And they say it might have been prevent-ed with a simple check up,\" the chief had said. \nMost of the villagers came to hear what Mr. Buhari had to say. He told them that high blood pressure is a 'silent killer' . Often the only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have a healthcare worker check it with a cuff. The good part is that there are ways to control it. \nFollowing Mr. Buhari's talk, Timo lined up to have his blood pressure checked. Just as Maggie had said, there was nothing to it. But, the test indicated that Timo's blood pressure was higher than it should be. \n\"Does this mean I'm going to have a stroke or die soon?\" Timo asked nervously. \n\"No,\" replied the teacher. \"You can change some of the things you are doing to cause it to be high.
