\n# 100HYMNSFOR TODAY\n\n# HYMNSFOR TODAY\n\nA SUPPLEMENT TO \nHymns Ancient and Modern \nCover design byJohn Piper \n# MELODY EDITION\n\nFirst published I969Fourth Impression I971 \nCompilation,Proprietors of Hymns Ancient and Modern \n# PREFACE\n\nToday's Christians need today's songs to sing as well as yesterday's.The greathymns of the past need no patronage or recommendation. But we cannot liveonly on the achievements of the past.A collection of hymns has to be bothmodern and ancient if it is genuinely to express the full mind of the people ofGod.The present volume is in origin a supplement to Hymns Ancient andModern Revised(I950).Accordingly none of its hundred hymns appears inthat volume.About forty will probably be new to worshippers ofall traditionsThe remainder have been gathered from many books in course ofa long searchfor hymns that speak to today. \nAlthough this book is a collection of hymns for our own time,it does not goso far in the direction of modernity as to include those written in an idiomlikely to be so shortlived that any book containing them will be dated withinmonths of publication. We have tried to steer a middle course,therefore,be-tween restatements of the traditional and ephemeral or‘pop'productions. On the other hand, the book includes words by older writers such as JohnClare,Philip Doddridge,Samuel Wolcott, and Charles Wesley as well asSydney Carter,Patrick Appleford,Fred Kaan, and other writers of our time.Accordingly, the volume both experiments with some of the hymns of todayand seeks to fill gaps in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised. \nThe book does not assume,as older hymnbooks did,a society more agri-cultural than industrial, untroubled by questions of race relations and humanrights.Nor does it presuppose a church untouched by the fierce conflicts of thecentury. \nThe book contains a number of tunes which appear here for the first time. But by deliberate policy the musical editors have not hesitated to use existingand well known tunes. For various reasons, new words have been more difficultto find. The vocabulary and idiom of words used in liturgy and worship becomelimited by familiar associations. To try and say something wholly fresh istherefore to run the risk of sounding bizarre,if not grotesque. Then there is thefact that the metres and rhymes of an older age are no longer employed bymodern poets. Finally, there is an inherent nature of religious language.Hymns tend towards aspiration and interjection. They have never easilyendured clear and precise propositional statement.Yet a good Christian hymnwill always say something coherent, and will not merely express passing feelingsand momentary attitudes. At a time of search for new ways of expressingChristian faith,it is not easy to carry out these explorations within the limitsimposed by the form of a hymn. However, the new hymns contained in thisvolume have seemed to stand out by their quality, and the editors are confidentthat their presence here will be warmly welcomed by many users. \nJOHN DYKES BoWERGERALD H.KNIGHTEDGAR BISHOPCYRIL TAYLORHENRY CHADWICK \n# ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS\n\nThe Proprietors
