Outline\n\nTHE TUNES which Englishmen sing to their hymns (plainsong apart)come from many countries, many religious cultures, and from anyperiod within the last 430 years. It should always be rememberedthat hymn tunes as we sing them are often somewhat altered, andsometimes drastically altered, from their original melodic forms, andthat it is positively the exception for any tune composed before about1750 to be sung nowadays to harmony written by its composer.Themain divisions into which the history of hymnody falls are these: \nGENEVAN \nTHIS FORM OF hymn tune(strictly psalm-tune,since as originallycomposed it was intended for metrical psalms)is the direct ancestorof the English hymn tune. The Genevan family of tunes all comefrom the period 1542-62,and were written for use with the metricalFrench psalter in Calvin's church in Geneva.Their outstandingcharacteristics are broad and continuous melody, almost alwaysconfined to notes of two values, easy and grateful to sing. There were125 of these in the metrical psalter, and some have survived intocommon use today. They are known by names either in the formPsalm 130,or in the form Old 124th(when they were used in earlyEnglish psalters, see below)or by the opening words of the originalFrench Psalm,as Au Fort de ma Détresse.A good example isOld 124th(EH
