The discussion traces RCS’s long development timeline, explains its promise of richer, device-independent communication, and highlights the security trade-offs that grow with more file and data sharing. The editorial emphasizes personal responsibility alongside advances in encryption and cybersecurity.","SECRETLAB TARGETS THE OFFICE CROWD \nJ U L Y 2 0 2 6 \nW W W . H A R D W A R E Z O N E . RCS, or Rich Communication Services is a messaging protocol that’s supposed to succeed SMS and MMS. Basically, think WhatsApp, Telegram or just about what any modern messaging app can do, but for the built-in standard phone app instead. \nI won’t fault you if you’re thinking what’s the big deal here since rich media and device independent communications have basically become the norm these days . Nobody bats an eyelid anymore sending photos and videos laden with special effects and filters on the daily. \nWhile this is true, we have to address the elephant in the room, which is the fact that almost nobody-0% among my own polled acquaintances-uses SMS anymore except for receiving one-time pins or CDC voucher notices . And I don’t think I have ever sent or received a single MMS in my entire life. \nRCS started development back in 2007, so why has it taken almost 20 years for it to even hint at becoming a mainstream standard? Well, I guess you’ll have to read the feature to find out. \nOf course, a wise man by the name of Uncle Ben once said that “With great powers, come great responsibility”, which brings us to the flipside of communications: security. Specifically our over-reliance on third party apps like WhatsApp and the supposed privacy safeguards that come with encryption. \nI feel that with technology, this will always be the two sides of a coin, the double edge of a blade. Technical progress dictates that content is continuously enriched. We are able to share much more information, with less limitations, all with a few taps of the finger; Not just media, but any type of file and data. The potential for loss and harm from a cybersecurity breach or incident has also grown. \nThe phone in your palm is powerful, and it’s up to you to take great responsibility. \nON THE COV ER \nPICTURES \nAPPLE, 12 3RF , AI, \nDIGITAL IMA GING HW Z \nART DIRECTION \nJASON TAN \nAll prices quoted in this tablet Dollars (SGD), unless otherwise \nare in Singapore specified . \nV ij a y A n a n d \nE d i t o r- I n-C h i e f \n1 \n􀂄 \nH W M \nJ U L Y \n2 0 2 6 \n2 \n􀂄 \nH W M \nJ U L Y \n2 0 2 6 \nContents \nJ U L Y 2 0 2 6 \n28 \nFEATURE \nTHE N EXT \nE V OLUTION IN MESSA GING \nFOLLOW US \nHARDWARE ZONE .
