shows him at full stretch a moment, after take-off.Note particularly how in DRIVING at the hurdle,he has thrown theheel of the leading foot just above the hurdle rail and at the same timehas lowered his chest and has reached forward with the left hand sothat already it is level with the right foot.Relaxation and concentrationare both extremely well demonstrated in this picture. \n# 1.Introduction\n\nIn the earliest days,Hurdling was more spectacular than technical, menran as fast as possible and jumped the fences as best they could, usuallyproducing a series of high jumps over the obstacles.Gradually the tech-nique of crossing the hurdles improved, firstly by the bent front leg actionand later by the straight front leg which most nearly approaches themethod employed today. The straight leg action came to popularity at theend of the 19th century and from it,the modern method has evolved. \nIn this booklet the three main hurdling events are covered: \n(i)120 yds.High Hurdles \n(ií)220 yds.Low Hurdles \n(ii)440 yds.Intermediate Hurdles \nIn all three events the most important requirement is SPEED;speedover the equivalent flat distance, using natural strides which fit the hurdlespacings.Whereas the technique of hurdle-crossing is often scraped,sand-papered and polished to the highest degree of perfection, the back-ground of speed is sometimes neglected. \nIt iscommon sense to argue that however efficiently an athlete negotiateshis obstacles,if his time over the equivalent flat distance is only mediocre, then his time over the hurdles must also be relatively poor. \nThe necessity for speed has been illustrated particularly well duringrecent years by the champion hurdlers of the world in all three
