andthe wind stirred the bare twigs,he sensedsomething was there.Something alive.Itwasn’t far away and it was watching him. \nThe beam from his torch swept across \nthe darkness and seeped into the woods. The deep blackness inside soaked up thelight. He could see nothing, but he knewsomething was moving.Dead leavescrunched.Something was there. An icyshiver ran down the back of Neil's neck. \nHe went back to the pile of timber andtook a box of matches from his pocket. He would feel safer once the bonfire wasburning.A warm glow of orange lightmight melt the fear. The matchboxshook in his clumsy fingers. \nAs he bent down to strike a match, heheard scraping behind him.The matchsnapped and the spark died. His heartpounded and his dry throat tightened. His fingers fumbled for another match-anything to kill the choking darkness. \nNeil felt so stupid. He knew everyinch of those woods. He'd lit bonfires after \ndark many times. It was his job to burn thedead wood when all was quiet. He was usedto being alone. That's what he liked aboutbeing a gamekeeper. He loved the woodsand being out in all weathers. He loved thequiet when no one was about. But now heknew he wasn't alone. \nThe eyes blinked. They flashed tinysparks of light as flames licked the paperand curled round the dry twigs. The pileof branches was soon alight;hissing, crackling and sparking in the darkness. As the breeze fanned the flames, the wholepile was a blaze of dancing light.Smokerolled upwards into orange branches androosting pheasants. \nNeil hurled dead leaves into the flamesand watched them flare. He turned to peerinto the wood-just as the eyes hid behinda tree.Thick smoke swirled into the night \nand drifted across the moon. \nAn owl screeched above him andflapped away into the blackness.Heturned suddenly-sure the eyes werefollowing his every move.Sure the deepgrowl was just a few steps away.He spunround in the mud, stumbled and ran ina spray of matches. \nThe fire fizzed and spat in a final flurry. It soon shrank to a small red puddle oflight before dying once and for all, whenfeet kicked smoking embers into the
