town of Batley,a working-class community whoseresidents found employment in the area's woollen mills and coalmines.'His parents'marriage seems to have been of the\"shotgun\"variety,with his father absent from the household formost of Garner's early childhood, and he was raised in the homeof his maternal grandmother. In I9I9 his mother followed hisfather to Canada with Garner and his younger brother Ronaldand settled in Toronto, but the marriage continued to be one inname only and eventually broke down completely when Mrs.Garner sued her husband for nonsupport. \nGarner's autobiography,One Damn Thing after Another(I973),the primary source of information about his life,is fairlyreticent concerning his early years in Toronto, although its briefdescriptions of what it was like to be poor and without closefriends suggest that this must have been a trying period for him.Whatever these tribulations, however,Garner was a consistentlybetter-than-average student who had no difficulty with most ofhis courses, and only the failure to pass the grammar portion ofhis high-school entrance examination kept him from attending acollegiate rather than a technical school. \nGarner did not enjoy his three years at Danforth Tech,inToronto's east end, where his conviction that he was not cut outfor a vocational education and his after-school job as a deliveryboy tended to isolate him from his fellows. He did submit senti-mental poetry to the school newspaper, but otherwise distin-guished himself only by some creditable performances as along-distance runner. He left Danforth Tech on his sixteenthbirthday in I929 and immediately went to work as a copy boy onthe Toronto Daily Star. \nAt the Star Garner learned the rudiments of daily journalism \nHUGH GARNER \nbefore he was fired in November of the same year.He creditedthe experience with teaching him how to write pointed andeconomical prose. After a period of odd jobs and hoboingaround the North American continent,he began to try his handat short stories and sketches, and n I936 he had a nonfictionpiece called \"Toronto's Cabbagetown\"accepted by The Cana-dian Forum.²A concurrent interest in radical and socialist poli-tics led to military service on the Loyalist side in the Spanish civilwar in I937-38.After returning to Toronto,Garner again appliedhimself to writing.Except for the acceptance of another shortsketch by the Forum in I938,³he was largely unsuccessful, although some of the short stories he wrote during this periodwould eventually be published in the early I950s. \nWhen World War II began in September I939,Garner joinedthe army, but he was soon discharged for alleged communistsympathies.During the brief period before he enlisted in thenavy,he wrote the story\"The Conversion of Willie Heaps,\"butfrom then until the end of the war;his only further brush withauthorship was an abortive attempt at a novel during a shortspell of shore duty in I944.Meanwhile,he had in I940 met, andin I941 married, the former Alice Gallant, and was soon thefather of a daughter and a son. \nAfter being discharged from the navy in October I945,Garnerbegan to write the novel that would eventually be published asCabbagetown(I95o)while working at various clerical andfactory jobs to support his family.Cabbagetown was finished byI948,and while waiting for it to find a publisher,Garnercompleted another novel,Storm Below (I949),and wrote severalof the stories that would be collected in The Yellow Sweater(I952).Storm Below was immediately accepted for publication, and Garner now felt able to embark on the professional writingcareer that, supplemented by occasional odd jobs,he pur","cbCaipQwiJxpP5g2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipQwiJxpP5g2","pdf",2196925,58,"English","# Biography\n## Early
